  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

I am having a hard time searching for graduate schools to apply to.

Some of my criteria at the moment are:

1. Christian college
2. Needs to offer Clinical Psy as a master's (or some sort of counseling as I am not yet sure which one I want...)

The states that I am looking for colleges (at the moment) are: washington, oregon, idaho, michigan, north/south carolina, virginia, colorado....although am open to other places.

Know any good college search engines? What else should I be looking for?

When I was applying to graduate schools, I actually didn't use any search engines at all. The American Physical Society puts out a book called "Graduate Programs in Physics" every year. It lists almost every graduate school in the country, and gives a great deal of information about every school, such as average GRE score, acceptance rate, minimum GPA, etc. I'm sure that there is an equivalent book for psychology. I wouldn't recommend buying it, since it costs about $60, and you'll only need it once. But your psychology department should have something like this on hand. Once you find schools that you're interested, you should visit their websites, which will give you some extra information, as well as (most likely) an online application.

As for what else you should be looking for, it would be an excellent idea to see if there are any graduate schools that support their students through teaching assistantships. In the natural sciences, we typically do not pay to go to school. We work as teaching or research assistants, and not only do we get paid for this, but the department gives us full-tuition scholarships as well. It would be nice if you didn't have to pay to go to grad school either.

Well anyway, I hope that helps!

Schools who are accredited by ATS are generally safe bets. Here's a list sorted by the type of degree the schools offer:

http://www.ats.edu/member_schools/basmlspa.asp

Try for example the
"MA in Biblical Counseling"
"MA in Counseling"

There's also a geographically sorted list:
http://www.ats.edu/member_schools/geograph.asp

Unfortunately a lot of these schools won't have clinical psychology programs since they are more theology focused, but worth checking out anyways.

One thing to check out for any school you're considering is whether they're accredited by the APA:
http://www.apa.org/ed/accreditation/doctoral.html

FWIW, I checked out what Biola offers in terms of psyc grad degrees, and they offer both a PhD and PsyD:
http://www.rosemead.edu/index.cfm
From the sounds of it, entry into the program does not require a masters degree, only a BA. Biola is accredited by both ATS and the APA. (Note that I have never attended Biola personally, and that it is located in California!)
