  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Got goals?

I'm jumping the gun on New Year's by asking this question. ;) But I've been thinking -- once you get to mid-life, and especially if you're single, your goals tend to change.

When you're younger, you want to establish your career, move out on your own, get financially stable, maybe buy a house if you can afford it, get-married-have-kids, etc. After awhile, you may accomplish those things, or you may accept the fact that you won't and that's okay.

That leads to my question: So what are your goals now?

I'm asking for selfish reasons too -- I tend to be bad at setting goals and would like some inspiration from others. :p Instead of setting, like, 6 manageable goals, I have about 20 different ones at any given time.

Anyway, one of my goals, in all seriousness, is to get exercise three times a week for the next six months. This is a goal prompted by mid-life ... I used to have no weight problem and had plenty energy, but now I have to work to stay in shape.

I'm still trying to figure out what a good spiritual 'goal' would be. :)

Goals, oh yeah, I've got them, some I seem to never be able to attain.

1. Spritually, I try to read my bible and pray daily. I also teach bible study at my church, so I try to improve and do better at the that. In my bible reading I try to study out areas, that I don't know that well.

2. I try to exercise 3-4 times a week. I have always struggled with weight issues.

3. I try to find ways to improve myself professionally. I seem to have alot of trouble with this. I never seem to have the guts to 'jump out on a limb' or never have been good at 'networking'.

4. Get a date. A whole nother subject. To be honest, I am not so sure this is even a goal anymore.

My goals are pretty simple now. Praise Jesus, i've accomplished many goals I set for myself concerning my education and career.

1. Continue fitness goals of working out 5x per week

2. Spiritually, to grow more dependant upon God and less upon me or others. I want to REALLY know that I know that I know that the Bible are God's promises and that they apply to ME. Sometimes, I do get that "God won't do that for me" mentality concerning certain areas of my life and I believe it stems from not truly trusting what His word says.

3. Save more money :D

Sounds like you guys have some pretty good goals! I think my spiritual goal is to spend time with the Lord on a more regular basis. It's going to start with my getting up earlier in the morning. If I feel rushed when I wake up, then I just jump out of bed and get ready for work, rather than having quiet time.

Mrstace, it is indeed tough to network and mix with new people. Do you have steps that you can take to reach this goal? One of the challenges about goals, I'm learning, is to figure out the small steps to take to get there. Otherwise it can feel unattainable.

Me, I'd like to explore a particular job within my field. I think the way I'm going to do that is contact one or two people who are doing that job and ask if they'd talk with me about their work and how they got into it. I'll give myself some time to do it ... probably till mid next year. I'm sure it wouldn't take that long, but if I put too much pressure on myself to do all these different goals at once, I'm not going to do any of them! :p

BeautyForAshes, I love your spiritual goal. I want to KNOW and TRUST the Bible more too.

This is a good point Jenster, maybe why I feel overwhelmed so many times about my goals. I have figured the small steps out..:sigh:

Sure, I have goals, really big ones inf act. For the last couple of yers, my ongoing journey has been about Trusting God With My Future. Sometimes that can be very scary, probably because most days I'd like to be in control and know where I'm going. Other days, my goals seem so distant as to be unattainable and that can be very discouraging.

But I believe God places goals and dreams in our hearts and I am believing he will bring those things to pass, no matter how remote they may seem at the moment.

Good idea, Jenster. I need to go to more social events, too. The problem is I really don't like being in large crowds with strangers. I much prefer smaller groups of mature people where you can actually carry on a good conversation with someone and get to know them.

BTW, Jenster, you are really cool. If you lived anywhere remotely close by, I'd ask you out (assuming your not under age, of course).
