Read several: Outline of the Book of Matthew

My favorites normally line up with the commentary guides found:

Covenant Theological Seminary / Library (look for Commentary Guide link on left)

And

Top 5 Commentaries on The Gospel of Matthew by Keith Mathison | Ligonier Ministries Blog. Note the blog posts on all the favorites at the bottom.

Favorite today, may not be the favorite tomorrow, because I may be engaged in a different type of studies, etc. It depends upon one's emphasis in their study - original language vs. theological vs. verse by verse translation vs. application, etc. or if I am seeking interaction with ones I do not necessarily agree with, etc.

The Gospel of Matthew: A Socio-Rhetorical Commentary by Craig Keener is the only one I've read and I remember it was very interesting but it's been more than a decade.

That one isn't too shabby! Witherington's output is also quite good.

A pastor at the church I formally attended gave me William Barclay's commentaries on the gospels. I wouldn't suggest this because I found out pretty quick Barclay denied the virgin birth and was a big proponent of the Q theory. I have since sold those to a half price book store and left that church ( for many reasons). So I'm glad you started this post.
