  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

I went to watch it last Sunday, after realizing that there is no cell on that day because of the AGM meeting. Since I am not a member of Revival Centre Church, I do not attend the meeting. So, I go and watch the movie, instead.

It is a word for word adaption from the gospel of John in the bible. What this means is that, "Almost all the script, all the words the people says in the movie is from the bible."

There is a narrator to narrate the scriptures, and then they will show scenes in relation to that narration. Like, at the start of the show, the narrator says, "In the beginning was the word," and so forth. And then, almost all the words every character says come from the bible. There is hardly any original creativity in it.

Jesus's words are as he had spoken, as recorded in the gospel of John. The firm is quite interesting for me... although I think it is a bit lacking in the way the firm is firmed. The blood on Jesus at the cruxification scene(which was off-scene) is a bit fake. Also, I tend to think that the firm is firmed in a better way in the beginning than the end. I feel the acting and the way things are conveyed are not that good from the point of cruxification onwards.

Generally, I will not say the firm is interesting. Not if you are a non believer. Although it does make me think about certain issues in my life, and ponder over who Jesus is, and if I really know him.

I watch it in Suntec city and the theatre is full. I was only able to sit in the front row. I think the firm is made more for Christians who never read the bible, and therefore can now get a movie version of the bible rather than for a non Christian who has never heard about the gospel. It literally tells you what the bible says, almost word for word. (Very little extra, etc)

In some scenes, Jesus will be seen as a bit crazy in the eyes of a non believer. (I actually see one shaking her head furiously and making a lot of noise through out the movie. I kind of feel that she thinks Jesus is a bit mad.)

After all, Jesus in this movie is shown as someone who keeps a lot of secret to himself, smiles at people with a bit of mad look in his eyes, gets disgusted at the sins and unbelief of people, says some of the words in a soft voice and then suddenly it turns to a shout. He is often cornered by people, and escapes from being stoned and killed twice at least. And people are often divided as a result of him. For instance, in a scene, people quarrels vibrantly over who Jesus is. And some even accuse he is demon-possessed. And a man actually tries to strangle him twice because he thinks Jesus is demon-possessed, and speaking blasphemy against God.

The most mad-looking incident in the movie is when he overthrows the temple. That is when the woman watching that I observe, shakes her head most vibrantly and makes the most noise. And the noise is what attracted me to look at the woman in the first place.

You see the anger in Jesus' eyes... forming... and then suddenly, he goes into a rage and madness. He overturns everything... and wow, the scene is just unforgetable. I have to confess that if I do not know Jesus, I will think too that he is a mad person just by watching that scene.

Go and watch it yourself. If you do, I think you will almost agree with me that the way the actor portrays Jesus is like, he is someone from another world, someone a bit mad in the eyes of the people of his times, someone people will find it hard to understand. Yet, this someone is full of love. There are a few scenes in which I enjoy watching. It is the scene where Jesus washes the feet of his disciple. When it comes to Peter, Peter resists it at first. And then when Jesus says that unless his feet are washed, he shall have no part in the kingdom where Jesus is going to, it is quite funny when we see Peter hurriedly put his feet into the water and say, "Then wash not just my feet but my hands and body, too." I also cannot forget the scene where a tear falls off the eyes of Jesus at the point when Mary sobs over her brother's death.

Oh yes, the hatred in the eyes of the religious teachers when they look at Jesus really makes you wonder just what is their intention for killing Jesus. Is it just merely political?
