Google claims it has finally reached quantum supremacy

According to the paper their Sycamore processor was able to perform a task in 3 minutes and 20 seconds that would have taken the world's best supercomputer 10,000 years to accomplish.

It seems like this kind of technology could become very useful in terms of computer modeling of physics applications.

Who would have thought that a search engine to make early internet more convenient would be capable of something such as this?

It blows my mind!

When you think about it though, Google is highly dependent upon "fast" computer technology so it makes sense that they would invest in this kind of technological progress.

Google is making huge investment in AI technology.

They literally want to get rid of their human programmers and just depend on AI to do all the programming work.

This thing could probably do the job a lot faster and cheaper than human programmers can.

So I'm guessing that's where the technology will be applied.

Nvidia (video graphics hardware company) is also investing on superfast processor tech to use with AI but to use AI in self-driving vehicles.

I immediately thought of the military applications. I don't know how they would use it, maybe early missile interception, but I don't really know. If I were in the military's professional thinkers that paragraph would leave me itchy, as it does a bit now.

I'm sure it will be used by the the defense department for decrypting, and probably in simulation software as well.

It's an important step, but this is a very specialised kind of computation of a sort that conventional computers find difficult. It's not just the hardware that's in its infancy - a lot of work has to go into software development frameworks and algorithms before QC becomes more generally useful.

I'd bet that someone is already porting the Linux system to run on it as we speak.
