  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

I’ve checked out a lot of providers and never saw a deal that good. If anyone knows someone who provides that, by all means please post a link! Most providers at that price range only offer 5gig transfer and around 100meg space. Right now my main project site is running at this location with only 50 megs web space but unlimited bandwidth. I will be moving it by spring of next year out of the beta stage and onto a pro hosting site (shell account) with way more services and more web space. Wow 40gig transfer for $10 a month would be great! I’d be happy with only 150meg space with a deal like that.

That's not bad. They have alot of the common services. There are some services I want that are not listed but I put them on my list and will send them an email to find out more when I'm ready to move.

On top of that I’ll need to be able to have my own sub domains and my own personal secure IRC for dev chats. There are other things but those are a must in addition to the basics. Most likely I’ll be paying much more than $10 to have an IRC server the way I want it. Being able to run a couple MUD’s would be good too but not necessary.

is your site just going to be a general christian site? or is it going to have something else its geared toward?

Im going to make a site on web design and graphic design. Its all going to relate to christianity though.

The Portal will primarily deal with Christian game news, previews and reviews. Actually I started it in the concept of Christian games that you play online but there really are not enough Christian games that you can play online. So I’m broadening the scope to cover any Christian video games in general. I guess that’s what being in beta is all about ;) I’m also promoting the development of Christian games so there are links to development tools in the portal as well (still adding that).

Forums are geared to mainly Christian games but I put a forum in for talking about any video games be they Christian or not. The site also has forums for people to talk about game development as well as a player match up forum where we can find other people to play games with as well as post ladder tournament results.

I’m interested in sub domains for a few small specialty projects to have their own locations under the umbrella of the network and with private FTP access. And full time IRC for member use as well as having it for scheduled community developer chats concerning projects.

I hope to keep the entire service free for public use with no add banners or pop-ups when I move to a permanent server. It’s mainly geared for Christians to use but I won’t ban non-believers for slipping in to see what all the commotion is about ;) as long as they behave of course.

I don’t plan on being the only volunteer and sometime down the road I’ll be taking applications for some volunteer positions among the community… hehe when there is a community that is. So far I have done 0% promotion and 100% design to this point. It’s all stable now and people are welcomed to make an account (backing up database now) but the real aggressive site promotion will begin after the move which will most likely be in the spring of 2004.

Yeah at least at Lycos that seems to be how it’s shaping up. I’ve worked with other forums and PHPBB works just as good. I considered on Nuke for a portal and I may look at that some more on my test site but this portal is written specifically for PHPBB and works pretty well. I’m not moding much and most wont even notice much beyond what is visible now. A few more functions will work though but mostly I’m trying to keep it fairly simple but very usable.

As for themes I have flashed through a lot of them but the default seems to look very good to me. It looks bright and cheery and I have some ideas for news posting graphics that may add a little needed color. Too many graphics slows down load time and increase bandwidth use so I’m keeping this in mind.

well ive used a lot of different forum types. I started off using phpbb, then switched to invision power boards, and then i bought a subscription to vbulletin. I found invision a little buggy, I think it was a bad version that was currently out. Phpbb was awesome, i loved it. vbulletin is awesome too, but you pay for it to be that way hehe.

So are you good with the actual coding? Php and working with MySQL?

No not really. PHP is not very hard to work with but I know little about Mysql at this point. Most of my studies revolve around C/C++ programming and UNIX/Linux/Windows systems. I have my own servers at home but I don’t have any real supported broadband connection here. If anything I should really be learning some pearl but I’m not really even trying to learn PHP. MySQL on the other hand, I may be picking up a text book for sometime.

Blessings SlowRoasted,

I use Hostdime.com http://www.hostdime.com/hosting.shtml They have awesome customer service that responds quickly. I pay $9/month and I get 750 MB of diskspace, 20 Gig of bandwidth, unlimited emails accounts, unlimited subdomains, unlimited Mysql databases, unlimited mailing lists, and a whole host of software that they have installers so I do not have to upload the software. Their installer will install phpbb 2.06, PostNuke, PHP Nuke, Invision, php Links, php lists, blogs, php support tickets, 4Images Gallery, a really good guestbook, Form Mail, shopping cart, and a whole lot of other software. I've installed 13 databases (7 are active the rest are either test databases or projects I have in the works. Yea I stay busy working on my site LOL) You can build just about any type of website with them. They cater to the professional developer to people like me. Not professional but beyond Tripod ^_^
Can you tell I'm a happy customer
