• The General Mental Health Forum is now a Read Only Forum. As we had two large areas making it difficult for many to find, we decided to combine the Mental Health & the Recovery sections of the forum into Mental Health & Recovery as a whole. Physical Health still remains as it's own area within the entire Recovery area.

If you are having struggles, need support in a particular area that you aren't finding a specific recovery area forum, you may find the General Struggles forum a great place to post. Any any that is related to emotions, self-esteem, insomnia, anger, relationship dynamics due to mental health and recovery and other issues that don't fit better in another forum would be examples of topics that might go there.

If you have spiritual issues related to a mental health and recovery issue, please use the Recovery Related Spiritual Advice forum. This forum is designed to be like Christian Advice, only for recovery type of issues. Recovery being like a family in many ways, allows us to support one another together. May you be blessed today and each day.

  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Hi all,

I began listening to an OCD Podcast today that discusses OCD in broad, general terms, the misunderstanding behind OCD, the doubt that goes into OCD, and the overall sense of being alone in the midst of a disorder that is strikingly common.

You can listen to a podcast simply by clicking play on your computer. I've been listening to it at work. The contributors are therapists and professionals in the world of studying, diagnosing, and treating OCD. Sadly, there are only two episodes available from these specific providers at the moment, but because I am interested in learning more, I can add links to this post as I come across them.

Additionally, I know a lot of sufferers here have thoughts that relate directly to religious doubts; these resources are generalized, but can specifically touch upon issues of scrupulosity.

Books
It'll Be Okay by Shannon Shy
(This book helped me immensely when I was spiking. It's a personal first person narrative about one man's struggles with OCD, his various compulsions, his relationship with God, and his coping mechanisms. I am willing to lend this book via Kindle to anyone who requests it).
Overcoming Obsessive Thoughts

Online Resources
Pure Obsessional OCD
Indopedia
International OCD Foundation
Exposing OCD
Don't Believe Everything You Think
OCD Help by Dr. Jonathan Grayson
OCD Reflections
When "Better Safe than Sorry" Is a Lie
So Now You Know
The Beat OCD Blog
My OCD Blog by Jason McClary
The OCD Diaries

If anyone with a Kindle would like to borrow Shannon Shy's book, please PM me. I can only lend it out to one person at a time, and for a two week period (Amazon's rules, not mine); if more than one person asks, it'll have to be a first-come-first-serve basis.

In the meantime, I highly recommend taking about 15 minutes to listen to Part One of What Is OCD?. Part Two can be accessed directly at this link.

As with everything, the above materials may cause a spike, but I genuinely believe learning about your condition is an integral step in getting better.

Anything specfically for my doubt?

I'd listen to the podcast. They discuss how OCD is specifically a "doubting" disorder. It doesn't deal directly with scrupulosity, but it does touch on issues of doubt.

If you like, I can try to dig up more doubt-specific resources for you.

If u have time I would love it. I work full time then I am a mommy so I have little time. Thank you so much!

Hey Raven,

I did a little digging and came up with the following websites. Three links are strictly from the Christian perspective (marked with an *) which I think might help you in ways I can't, since I am not a Christian. All, however, explain how OCD is "The Doubting Disease". The one marked with two ** is a chronicle of someone else who doubts. I included it because, even if it doesn't share coping mechanisms, it might help in understanding you are definitely not alone.

Guilt Beyond A Reasonable Doubt
Brain Physics (OCD FAQ)
Exposing OCD - Scrupulosity**
“Let He Who Is Without Sin:” OCD and Religion*
OCD Insight: I Am Undone*

I would like to suggest a few resources that I have found helpful. All of these books are written by Christians. (FYI: I can't post links yet)

I had HOCD, ROCD and most recently a battle with Faith OCD.

I recommend these in this order:

OCD: Finding Hope on the Edge of Insanity. by Marc Grimaldi
Marc is a pastor who has struggled with OCD for many years. I wrote a review on the Amazon site. This is one of the best books I have read from someone who has struggled with various forms of OCD. I really appreciated his firsthand Christian perspective.

*****************************
OCD: Freedom for the Obsessive-Compulsive by Michael R. Emlet
This is a small booklet that covers the basics very well. This is a great tool to give your friends and family to help them understand your struggle. Very Short and concise.

If you wanted to buy them in quantities, it's cheaper to buy them from Timeless Christian Books. Which is a great site for many counseling related books.

*****************************
Can Christianity Cure Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder?: A Psychiatrist Explores the Role of Faith in Treatment by Ian Osborn.
This is a great book that covers various aspects. I thought the best part of the book were the 3 chapters dedicated to 3 popular Christians who likely had struggles with OCD. Martin Luther, John Bunyon and St. Therese. Reading about their stories helped me to feel not as alone in the battle, particularly since they are considered such great people of faith.

*****************************
Living Victoriously with Obsessive Compulsive Disorder by Heather Crilly.
I can't 100% recommend this book because all of the info Heather covers is covered in the books above. It was nice to read her story and I felt her pain, so from that perspective it was a good book to read. If you are a book worm, go for it. But if you are strapped for cash, just stick with the materials above.

*****************************
I pray that these materials will bless you the way they have blessed me. I know it really sucks sometimes. My prayer is that the peace of Christ will be with you all.
