  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Photography can't realy be leared from a book, but just about any book can teach you about f/stops and what nots. The betterphoto site has been a pretty useful site for some (just google it)

Local camera clubs can be pretty helpful to..and the good ones have activities and outings that are great for practice. Best way to learn photography is just to do it!

I will take a minority side (or so it appears). I think the best thing is a photography class because you get feedback from an instructor about your photography. The second best thing is a photography club, where people with experience can help give you feedback. The third best thing is a book. Practical Photography published a good book a few years ago, and John Hedgecoe wrote a series of good books for the beginner. If you want a real challenge check out the Ansel Adams series of books on photography. If nothing else, you begin to get an appreciation of his genius when you read about all that he puts into a photograph. Personally, I also like general books about art. Learning how to arrange subjects or use of color in a painting has direct application to photography.

The trouble with "just doing it" is that you can get into some bad habits that may be difficult to break later on. You tend to take a scatter gun approach by just taking lots of pictures (not that the pros don't take lots of pictures), and picking the ones you like without knowing how you got there. When you start to understand depth of field, zones, contrast, subject placement, and background you can pre-visualize your picture so much better and really improve your photography.

The Joy of Photography by the Eastman Kodak company is a great book that's been revised several times. It goes over all the main topics you'd cover in any basic photography class including many different sections of composition, a whole lot of pictures, and sections on techincal issues.

Make sure to get the most recent edition as it was first published in 1979! Since the last edition was published in the 90s, it doesn't specifically cover digital photography, but the technical bits of the book aren't what makes it great anyway. It's one of the best books I've seen that discuss lighting, stops, exposures and many different ways to improve composition.

If you like nature photography, John Shaw has a series of books out that are great resources. The Photographer's Field Guide to Nature Photography was a great resource to me many years ago. The concepts of photography are the same regardless if you are shooting digital or film. One book can't do it all for you. I have a library of photography books - mostly on people shooting because I'm a full time professional. You pick up a lot of nuggets of information out of all the books.

Visit Borders or Barnes & Noble and take a look at their photography section. plan to spend some time there leafing through their books.

There is also a huge online forum for photographers called photo.net. It's a great resource. Just stick the www in front of it (since I can't post links).

As a side note, I'm 100% self taught from beginner through professional level. All from books and the internet - and also from some very caring networking contacts I've made in the industry. You can learn as much as you want to on your own if you have the desire and discipline.

Go for it!

Chris ;)

Thanks to everyone who posted in here. I would have commented back soon, but I guess this was just last on my list. I have not got a book from the Library about photography and I will soon be signing up for this one day class through the community center. The class is pretty basic, its to get u used to your digital camera, and when to use certain feature. I thought all this stuff was a good start for now. I have read everyones comments, and I will take them all into consideration. I will be looking to see if my library has access to any of the books you guys mentioned. As well as me looking into different photography classes later on down the road. One last thing, about the photography clubs. How did you guys go about finding out about clubs in your area? I am planning on asking at that class i'm going to, I just want your feed back as well. Thanks again.

To find a club, the best place to start is your local professional photography shop. Do a search on google - the largest local city + photography club. Finally connect with working pros, they often have a lot of contacts in your region and should be able to point you in the right direction.
