  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Has anyone seen this film? I hadn't heard of it until the BAFTA awards last month. It seems rather interesting - I'm quite interested in the whole McCarthyism thing, but don't know much about it. Looks like it's only recently come out in the UK, and I'm hoping to find somewhere local that's screening it this weekend. Just wondered, though, if anyone else round here had seen it and what they think of it.

David.

i say it. i really liked it. i thought the way they did it was really good. i liked that they didn't try and have anyone play McCarthy but just used clips of him. i also thought David Straitharn was amazing. If you can't see it at the theater it should be coming out on DVD soon. it is not a movie you have to see on the big screen.

I second all the above. It's an excellent film. David Strathairn's performance is spectacular. You have to see films of Edward R. Murrow to know how accurately he captured him. And the use of actual McCarthy film clips and ERM quotes gives it that much more impact.

Murrow:

"We proclaim ourselves as indeed we are, the defenders of freedom where ever it still exists in the world. But we cannot defend freedom abroad by deserting it at home."

Still relevant 50 years later.

This movie was my favorite although I guessed it didn't have much of a chance to win the oscar. I was in junior high school during this period in history which is reflected in the film. I remember Edward R. Murrow. And Senator Joseph McCarthy and the Committee on Un-American Activities. Even if I didn't remember this personally I would highly recommend this well acted film as a piece of history not to be missed. All actors did well but David Strathairn is perfect as Murrow..every little expression. George Clooney is an excellent director. We will probably see more of this kind of good directing from him in the future.

In one of the scenes with McCarthy (not acting, but actual films ) ...if you look closely down the table towards the far right you can see a very young Robert F. Kennedy sitting there.
