I blogged today about my Good Friday worship and took photos of our sanctuary. I thought it might interest some of you.

I am curious if your church has any traditions for Good Friday. You will see we have black on our cross that will be removed on Sunday and replaced with white.

I just thought it would be nice to share and see what others do. I look forward to your replies.

Hi Hummie!

Our cross was covered with a black cloth as well last night. We also have a HUGE wooden cross that is up near the baptismal font and in between the first few pews.

Our service starts out in light and gradually grows darker until just the huge cross is illuminated in red light. It's an extremely somber service...and I can't wait until Easter now.

I played the flute (while the choir sang) at the very beginning of the service and messed up more than I'd like to admit.:blush:

Oh well. I have another year to practice.

Thanks for the pictures. But I am confused by one - is your pulpit behind the altar? How do you explain that? Curious as to why. It is very Catholic to make more of the altar than the pulpit. That is why they have the Mass and we do not.

Happy Resurrection Day,
Cosmic

While I agree it is odd to have the pulpit behind the altar, I'm confused where you get the idea that the Mass is dependant on how prominent the altar is in the chancel.
The altar is supposed to be the main prominent focal point of the church.

And who says we don't have the Mass? We don't call it that, but Lutherans have not abolished the Mass at all.

Well I COULD have worked from home but my boss took the whole week off so I had to be there (I'm the Art Director). I got the Friday before to work from home.

On the bright side, the whole week I did about 3 hours of actual work (pretty slow right now...we have a big huge auction fundraiser coming up that is consuming everything else). It's non-profit and since it is a TV station I was able to get my freelance stuff for other clients done (they know and approve of me doing that). My co-worker (who has been there for years) asked if we had the day off so I'm guessing they do take it off sometimes.

Hummie your church is so pretty :)

Very interesting setup on the altar/pulpet. It struck me as also interesting how the baptismal font is setup on the steps to the altar rail. Thus one must always pass it in order to take communion.
The altar area seems to be shaped in a V or possibly diamond. Is this one of those newer designs where the congregation sits to the sides of the altar, in lieu of the traditional with two or more rows along a central asile with the altar, pulpet, and lectionary on a raised dais? Hard to describe in words... The furniture and decorations look very moderne, almost Danish modern. How old is this building? It's very attractive and modern. Nicely done, though not something I can be comfortable with. Just an old fogey I guess...:sorry:

Yes, our service did that too...it went from lighter to darker. It really sets the mood.

Our sanctuary has three isles of pews in a semi circle, so the front is more like a half-circle. I do not remember when this building was made, but we have a very old building also, one of the first LCMS churches....I think it was maybe the third one...cannot remembr for sure. We are currently doing a building program as we are SO out of room. Maybe i will take some more photos for you and find out when it was built.

I have no idea of the pulpit behind the alter and why. I guess I have never thought of such things. I suppose it all might have to do with things being centralized to see from all three isles of pews.

The altar/pulpit arrangement would make sense with a semi-circle design. Where is your church located?

The old church building of St.Marks in Eureka had a half moon sanctuary. The whole altar was hand carved by the sculptur and artist Marv Linenbroker. The baptismal fount was built right into the altar. You couldn't even see it until it was taken out. Right above the altar was a large hand carved dove with emeraled wings. Beautifull.

The choir sat behind the altar and the altar was basicaly right in the center of the room. I have a pic of the altar somewhere. They moved it into the new sanctuary but in a side room like a chapel.

I think I was in that church once when it was first built a long time ago...vaguely remember it.

I went to church Sunday and did snaps some shots, but they are not very good...and I realized there are four rows of pews, not three...that make up the semi-circle, with the main aisle between the middle two.
