Some of us were discussing this topic on another forum and I thought I would get input from here.

Where did the term "Good Friday" originate?

Why was Friday chosen when it is obvious to most that Jesus could not have been in the tomb 3 days and nights if He were crucified on Friday? Most Scriptural evidence points to Wednesday as the day for the crucifixion.

My questions may seem vague, I apologize, but I am just looking for information on the foundation for Good Friday as the chosen day. Thanks.

To my knowlege, limited as it is, Good Friday is the day of man's redemption, when we became good in God's eyes. Why Friday? The Last Supper was a Passover Seder, Always on Thursday, Jesus was crucified the following day.
The 3 day thing is Friday, Saturday, Sunday, THREE DAYS, not 72 hours. Hope this helps.

Interesting view concerning Good Friday, thank you. However, I disagree with you concerning the 3 day issue. Jesus stated, "For as Jonas was three days and three nights in the whale's belly; so shall the Son of man be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth." Matthew 12:40. This, along with the fact that there are 2 Sabbaths during the week of Passover, I must disagree that He was crucified on Friday.

Here's something that I found that I thought was interesting.

Today the whole Church mourns the death of our Savior. This is traditionally a day of sadness, spent in fasting and prayer. The title for this day varies in different part of the world: "Holy Friday" for Latin nations, Slavs and Hungarians call it "Great Friday," in Germany it is "Friday of Mourning," and in Norway, it is "Long Friday." Some view the term "Good Friday" (used in English and Dutch) as a corruption of the term "God's Friday." This is another obligatory day of fasting and abstinence. In Ireland, they practice the "black fast," which is to consume nothing but black tea and water.

Vijaykyu,

re: "The Last Supper was a Passover Seder, Always on Thursday..."

That would be incorrect. Passover can occur on any day of the week.

Also, Luke 24:21 indicates that the crucifixion could not have occurred any later than Thursday.

Thanks for your post! Both you and Andrew (a Thursday advocate) have given me a great deal to think about!  I had always believed that the crucifixation had occured on a Wednesday, but your post makes a powerful case for Friday.  I will have to give this some serious study!
