  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

While I have not read the article, I would like to caution readers that while some information on orthodoxinfo.com is good (I often link to some of the wonderful apologetics resources therein) there are some articles that take an alarmist approach to some things in Orthodoxy. In a word, there are real life Fr. Vasillys in this world, buyer beware.

I gave it a quick read because I’ve been busy, but I did like the article. It seems like he’s saying the problematic situation we’re in today is due in large part to the political turmoil in Europe in the 20th century which affected the church structures in the old world, coupled with the unique experience of immigrant churches in this country. I think the assertion he makes that denying the ethnic elements of the church and creating a completely generic American Orthodoxy would be a mistake is absolutely spot on. It seems like he’s suggesting a real Holy Synod in this country that would supersede the existing structure of SCOBA. I have no idea how practical or likely that is, but I don’t know what the alternatives are. It seems like the autocephaly of the OCA does introduce some complications though.

I’ve enjoyed many of Fr. Schmemann’s writings and haven’t been so hot on some others. I think his insights on secular culture are terrific though, and he touched on them in this article. Some background on the whole canonical base of the church can be found in this article by Fr. Florovsky - The Limits of the Church . I’ve actually found I enjoy his writings a great deal as I read more of them.

The orthodoxinfo site has some great stuff on it, but I have found many of the articles on it to be quite abrasive though. I have had a real problem with some of the stuff I’ve read by Fr. Michael Azkoul in particular. The one thing I’ve found I really dislike on that site is the use of the word “Papist” or “Papism”. They have a long tradition of being used in a highly derogatory and offensive manner in this country and I just cringe whenever I see them.
