God's Word will not return to Him void?

Isaiah 55:11 - So shall my word be that goeth forth out of my mouth: it shall not return unto me void, but it shall accomplish that which I please, and it shall prosper in the thing whereto I sent it.

When I was growing up I was always told this verse was referring to witnessing to others and that it meant if you shared the Word, a person would eventually seek God.

I heard a differing view the other day and I'm wondering if this is what others think it means?

Is this verse telling us to petition God for His promises? In other words, when we pray, are we to petition Him "Lord, You told me that if I prayed and doubted not, that I could move mountains. I'm claiming that promise right now if it be Your will."??

Good point. Something to ponder and study. :)

This could probably mean a number of different things and each person may see it to mean something different to what another person sees it to be.

I like to think it means that we are to pray for the lost, those who have gone astray, those that knew the truth and now do not walk in the Christian pathway that God would have us walk.

I have seen a mother pray for over 15 years before she had seen her wayward daughter return to Christ and get re-baptised.

Cliff, a child doesn't stand a CHANCE against a praying mother! I've seen this personally. :)

Sometimes what the Lord does in order to get a mother's child to open up to Him isn't pleasant though and mothers have to be prepared to be there and not kick their child while they're down. What I mean is, a mom can't then say "if you had only listened to me sooner, you wouldn't be going through this". Instead a mom should say "God can get you through this and He will."

I watched a person's mom just sit on the sidelines during a trauma and when her child finally reached out, she was right there with encouraging scripture and reasons why the bad thing had happened. It was the best thing she could've done...stand back and let them deal with it on their own...then when they really can't.....embrace them with the truth.

I really liked what Doug Batchelor said about being humbled. He said "you can humble yourself before God or you can let HIM humble you...either way, you will be humbled at some point."

Our job as Christians is to pick that person back up and let them know we have a fair God, and He only did what He had to do in order to open their eyes.
