  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Praise the Lord!! I learned something new yesterday....when we go through negative experiences, it is God's way of saving us from more pain and suffering in the long run....

I'm sorry. I don't fully understand the concept.

I will try to explain the concept:

Hypothetically speaking....let's say I have anger management problems, and I get arrested by the police for posting a social media threat.

After my arrest, I go to counseling/psychotherapy for one year in order to work on my anger management problems.

Because I was arrested by the police and because I received counseling for my anger management problems after my arrest, I learned my lesson and I do not make any more threats to anyone.

If I wasn't arrested by the police for posting a social media threat, I possibly could have been arrested for actually carrying out an act of actual violence.

For this reason, I can say that my arrest for posting a social media threat was a blessing in disguise because it prevented me from being arrested by the police for a more violent action.

Does this make sense?

I don't think we can know why some things happen, I know several people who are going through a lot of suffering and in their circumstances I highly doubt it is to keep them from worse things in the future. What we can say though is that God wants us to be holy first and foremost (1 Peter 1:16) and sometimes he allows us to suffer so we draw closer to him. But also God works in all things for the good of those who love him (Romans 8:28) so even when bad stuff happens God can bring good from it. Recently I've had some difficult struggles myself yet it has taught me to trust God more and be more focused on him. We do know too that God weeps at the suffering he sees (John 11:35) and praise him indeed that he has promised us a glorious future without pain or sorrow, and so great will the glory be in us that our present sufferings will not be worth comparing with it (Romans 8:18)!

I shouldn't generalize. During our one-on-one Bible study, my Bible study leader said that....for him, when negative things happen...he thanks God because he thinks that the negative experience is God's way of protecting him from an even more negative experience. I hope that I made some sense.

Generally one follows a comment like that with a reason.

Okay. Say you got arrested for something light like saying the wrong thing on Facebook. Rather than be thankful that you got arrested, isn't it much more reasonable to just get a lawyer?

I'm sorry. I just don't follow the logic.

I did get a lawyer. Because I got a lawyer, my charges were dismissed by the judge....and so I do not have a criminal conviction. The only reason that I am thankful for my arrest (for making a social media threat) is that my arrest is deterring me/preventing me from being arrested for a crime that is much more serious.

You see, I struggle with anger problems. My arrest was the wake-up call that I needed....my arrest caused me to say, "I have an anger problem. If I don't deal with my anger problem now, I will have even more serious difficulties/troubles in the future."

I hope this makes sense
