  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

First of all, I wanna say hiiiii! I'm a newbie, and I just had to come find a loving Christian place that embraces God and Jesus. It's so important to daily nourish yourself with the Word and with people who also hold God dear to their heart. I take so much time out to try and nourish other people who don't believe in God, or who have certain problems, that I've been neglecting myself. It feels like I'm being barraged by the disbelievers who would SWEAR up and down that we came from monkeys, or that hetero-sexual marriage supporters are backwards, or that the bible is one big book of contradictions, and there's only so much u can take before you crack, so I am glad to be here and find some suport. :amen:

I've been very disheartened lately. I used to think that more people embraced God, but my eyes are opening more to the fact that so many people just wanna stay with the safe thing: "I believe there's . . . something. There's something, alright." Or this whole MISSING LINK thing that scientists have found to possibly explain evolution. ^_^ It's got the "rational" thinkers :nosepick: , the "well-learnt" minds :mmh: , and the atheists jumping for joy. After my disheartenment subsided, I realized something very important. There are just some ppl who will never be convinced in the existence of a God unless God slaps him upside the head physically. You could show ppl proof until kingdom come, and they will always find a way to explain it away with philosophy or science.

Take an atheist family, for example. (This is my fav. example ^_^) Say their youngest child comes to them and says:

"Daddy, I just saw an angel in my bedroom." :nooo:

He's not going to buy it, even if his kid says it. He'll probably take the child to a psychiatrist if it keeps up, and the psychiatrist, after ruling out mere imagination, will deem it some sort of schitzophrenia :hypno:

Then weeks later, the little kid could introduce the angel to the father. "Hi dad, this is Saphrael (or whatever lol.)

The angel could wave, do the IRISH JIG, or start playing on his harp JAILHOUSE ROCK! for him :papapa:, but that man is probably still gonna go back to a psychiatrist for help, and then the psychiatrist, only knowing his craft, is gonna say that schitzophrenia is genetic, and therefore the child's schitzo episode triggered the father's schitzo episode to happen. The man leaves feeling good. Everything is explained away :p.

Moral of the story, some ppl just cannot get it if they don't have proof. It's so discouraging. God made me a loud mouth by nature lol, and so I'm usually driven to say SOMETHING when I hear someone offending God or claiming the Bible is stupid. But I'm gonna try and focus more of my energies on people who want help, or people who need help but don't know where to get it from. Maybe I'll stay saner for a while that way.

Most atheist I know and myself as a "skeptic" would be some of the most devout Christians out there if there were actually any proof. We have fundamentalist screaming that you can't be a Christian if you understand modern biology and that is the last thing you want to tell an educated atheist. At that point you are creating the false dichotomy of "believe my compilation of various stories of dubious origins in spite of actual tangible science". A religious fundamentalist will never win in a facts based argument, the world just simply does not reflect the observations made by bronze age people. That being said, some of the biggest names in science are unabashedly Christian without believing that the earth is literally 6000 years old.

Also keep in mind that seeing things that are not there is a pretty good indicator of mental illness. I have trouble with people who "communicate" with God and try and tell me that hearing voices is normal simply because some seriously messed up people who have done some even more messed up things (cutting the arms and legs off a baby comes to mind) because they thought God was telling them to do it. I urge you, if you are seeing things that no one else does or hearing voices in your head, seek a mental health professional.

Thank u for ur concern, but I'm pretty sure that if I were to SEE anything, demon, angel, whatever, it would have nothing to do with a mental illness. And for those of my family and my friends who have seen their share of things, I don't think they're ALL possibly suffering from a mental illness.
Don't know about anyone else, but at least for me, I'm sure about that. ;) Thanks for the good-spirited advice tho.

With the atheist example, I didn't mean to come off offensive if I did. Certainly ppl do have mental issues, but it's a little too convenient for me to say that all the people I have met, christian and nonchristian alike, who have seen angels or demons are ALL suffering from some sort of mental problem.

Have a good day tho

Do you think people who have mental illnesses think of themselves as being mentally ill? This is why so many people go "off meds". With medication they get some symbalance of "normalcy" to their lives and feel that they are either "cured" or that they never really had anything wrong. Soon as they stop taking the meds the voices and imaginary people come back again though.

I am not trying to insinuate that all people who see things that are not there are suffering from a mental disorder. Actually Carl Sagan points out in "The Demon Haunted World" that a very large segment of the population on rare occations experience hallucinations. Also generally if you are a religious person, you are going to see religious icons. This is why you never see mental pacients in the Islamic world seeing the Virgin Mary, yet she is spotted all over central and south America where there are large Catholic populations.

With the atheist example, I didn't mean to come off offensive if I did. Subjective experiences really don't prove anything. If I said I just had a chat with God and he told me that Jesus never really existed and we should all be worshiping a tree in Mexico, would you take that as proof that Christanity was wrong? The fact is that people all over the world and of every different faith have subjective religious experiences and none of them prove that one religion is more valid than the other.

I am not offended by your characterization of atheist as stuborn people who refuse to accept evidence, I just think it is dishonest. If you want to see stuborn people that won't accept evidence you need look no further than a thread in this very forum, but I can tell you the shoe is squarly on the other foot.

Hi back. Welcome.

I'm a newbie, and I just had to come find a loving Christian place that embraces God and Jesus.... It feels like I'm being barraged by the disbelievers who would SWEAR up and down that we came from monkeys, or that hetero-sexual marriage supporters are backwards, or that the bible is one big book of contradictions, so I am glad to be here and find some suport.

Well, you have just jumped into the debate and discussion boards where everything is up for grabs. It can get pretty rough at times. You will find support - but you should also expect to defend your position. There are other boards on CF where things are quieter and gentler.

I've been very disheartened lately .... this whole MISSING LINK thing that scientists have found to possibly explain evolution. It's got the "rational" thinkers, the "well-learnt" minds, and the atheists jumping for joy. After my disheartenment subsided, I realized something very important. There are just some ppl who will never be convinced in the existence of a God unless God slaps him upside the head physically.

Maybe that is exactly what God has done - slapped those who deny God as sovereign with a piece of his creativity.

You could show ppl proof until kingdom come, and they will always find a way to explain it away with philosophy or science.

Or Bible verses.

Yes, I can see how one might become depressed.

Its creepy seeing a Demon.
I swear to God I sometimes see them in the corner of my eye.

No NO.. Definately not the cats.
Apparently looking into one of their eyes, puts you into a trance that just sucks you in. Thank God I haven't experienced that yet. Though that chance probably will increase when I go to University.
