Hello folks. Today's devotional covers God's unchanging nature, known as immutability. This is the reason why when God promised Abraham a son, Isaac, the promise was fulfilled over two decades later.

Verse
Psalm 145:13-14; 17-18 (NIV): "Your kingdom is an everlasting kingdom, and your dominion endures through all generations. The Lord is trustworthy in all he promises and faithful in all he does. The Lord upholds all who fall and lifts up all who are bowed down. The Lord is righteous in all his ways and faithful in all he does. The Lord is near to all who call on him, to all who call on him in truth."

Malachi 3:6 (NKJV): "For I am the Lord, I do not change; Therefore you are not consumed, O sons of Jacob."

Hebrews 13:8 (NKJV): "Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today, and forever."

1 Samuel 2:2 (NKJV): "No one is holy like the Lord, For there is none besides You, Nor is there any rock like our God."

Revelation 1:8 (NKJV): "‘I am the Alpha and the Omega, the Beginning and the End,’ says the Lord, ‘who is and who was and who is to come, the Almighty.’"
Explanation
These five passages from the Bible speak about various aspects of God's character and nature, emphasizing His immutability, faithfulness, and constancy. By understanding these truths, we as believers can grow in trusting God more deeply, especially during challenging times. Let me explain each passage briefly:
  1. Psalm 145:13-18 highlights the eternal nature of God's kingdom, emphasizing His faithfulness and reliability in keeping His promises. The verses tell us that God is trustworthy in all He does and upholds those who fall or are bowed down.
  2. Malachi 3:6 declares that "I am the Lord, I do not change," meaning that God remains steadfast and unchanging throughout history. This verse underscores His constancy as a foundation for believers' trust in Him.
  3. Hebrews 13:8 emphasizes Jesus Christ's immutability by stating that "Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today, and forever." In this passage, we learn about the unchanging nature of God Incarnate—a truth vital for our faith and understanding of His character.
  4. 1 Samuel 2:2 asserts that there is no one holy like the Lord, reminding us that He alone is eternal and unchangeable. The verse highlights the uniqueness of God's nature and power among all other beings.
  5. Revelation 1:8 presents Jesus Christ as "the Alpha and the Omega," symbolizing His role in the beginning and end of time, further emphasizing that He remains constant throughout history. This passage underscores God's timelessness and unchanging nature.
Societal Relevance
In today's modern world, Christians can grow in trusting God more by regularly reading Scripture (such as these verses), prayerfully meditating on His character, and seeking to live out their faith in obedience to Him. Additionally, engaging with other believers through fellowship, service, and accountability will strengthen one's relationship with God and increase confidence in His immutability. To keep our own promises better as Christians, we can follow these strategies:
  1. Prioritize commitment by carefully considering the consequences of making a promise before doing so;
  2. Follow through on commitments promptly and consistently to demonstrate integrity;
  3. Seek accountability from others in keeping our promises, whether friends or spiritual mentors;
  4. Pray for strength and wisdom in fulfilling our commitments. By staying focused on God's unchanging nature and character, we can better understand the importance of honoring our own promises as a reflection of His faithfulness.
For us Christians, including myself, it can be hard to keep promises in an ever changing society. When folks are stuck between a rock and a hard place, some people may break under pressure and begin to break their own promises. For instance, I promise my parents that I would eat more vegetables, yet most of the time, the veggies remain in the freezer for weeks or even a few months on end before eating them. However, we must remember the promise that God gave to Abraham in Genesis 12, how Abraham’s decedents would be abundant and be given a promised land. This promise by God to Abraham was fulfilled a quarter of a century later when Abraham’s wife Sarah gave birth to his son, Isaac in Genesis 21. Isaac grew up, and then became one of the founders of the Israeli nation. So we must not be discouraged if one can only keep a promise for a few months, as God can keep His promises forever. However, Christians must strive to be faithful and keep to our words. It can be difficult, but we can pray to Jesus and ask Christ to imbue His righteousness onto us.
