  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

As in 'I want to make my own electricity because I don't want to pay for it'
or
'I'll have to make my own electricity 'cos outside city life everyone lives in a cave and civilisation hasn't yet progressed beyond the great unwashed screaming 'witchcraft!' every time a visitor's mobile phone rings'?

And how did you get from playing a guitar to God despising suburbia?

LOL!! ^_^

If I can't make electricity, perhaps I shouldn't have it. If I can't completely understand it, perhaps I shouldn't use it.
Same for other technologies and luxuries.
Supposedly, there are ways to live where a man never has to step on a government road again. That sounds like salvation to me.

By the sweat of our brow? or by the sweat or our horse power?

Surely God despises Suburbia? Will I still be allowed to play through 'dem tube amps?

I fear the work load will be so great, electric guitar will no longer be an option.

Once I am able to leave the city, will I still be able to play electric guitar if I make my own electricity?
I'd say you'll be able to retire a rich man the day you can move to the suburbs and make your own electricity.

Of course that's not going to say alot for you being crispy and smoldering for the effort. Makes that electric guitar a far second to recovery time in the burn unit I'd imagine. hobbyist

By that reasoning, then, would you say that you'd never have a life saving operation because you don't completely understand the method of a surgeon- or take any form of medication because you may not understand or be able to reproduce the process that makes it?
Would you refuse to let someone you love- a spouse or child die by refusing to let them have an operation because you didn't 'get it' or hadn't made the surgical implements yourself, or didn't understand the electricity that powers vital machines in the process?

Do you know how to make bricks? No? Should you live in a house, then? Do you understand exactly how a plant can be turned into thread and woven into fabric- or how a manmade fabric is manufactured? No? Good luck walking round naked then!

Do you fully understand the gases and how they function and the process of respiration right down to the last detail? Can you create those gasses yourself? Well, quit breathing then!!!!

Yeah- that was getting silly by the end- but that's just to show that it's not a terribly sensible or logical way of reasoning, hon, is it?

Why on earth would you have a problem using electricity- or any other commodity purely on the basis that you didn't create or understand it?????

I'm not sure what the 'government' aspect has to do with it- but governments have been around for a looooong time- look in the Old Testament to see many of them at work. They're around to stay.

I still don't see why God would despise suburbia. As opposed to what? And what is so abysmal about suburbia anyhow that God would hate it?

You just exposed a flaw in my logic (more to come) based on my statement "If I can't completely understand it, perhaps I shouldn't use it".

No one man can do it all, so there must be a community.

Bricks can be made by stuffing them old pick up truck tires with mud. I've studied a little bit on construction. My father is a carpenter. I have no experience with sewing, however I know several mentors that will help me when the time is right.

Medicine is tricky. If it weren't for penicillin I would not be here, however penicillin doesn't seem to be too hard to make. Obviously it is more complicated than this, however I am beginning to think that some illnesses can be prevented by abstaining from certain things rather than creating elaborate medicines.

Why on earth would you have a problem using electricity- or any other commodity purely on the basis that you didn't create or understand it?????
I feel that if I can't troubleshoot or understand the commodity, it owns/controls me.

I still don't see why God would despise suburbia. As opposed to what?
As opposed to a small community that provides for them selves.

No government. No dictator. "We are all leaders here."

It is good that we have one then.

however I know several mentors that will help me when the time is right.
Helter Skelter?

I feel that if I can't troubleshoot or understand the commodity, it owns/controls me.
Have you discussed these feelings with a qualified professional?

As opposed to a small community that provides for them selves.
No government. No dictator. "We are all leaders here."
Are you seeking advice on how to set up a commune?

No one man can do it all, so there must be a community.

Like the communities we live in now- towns, cities, families, villages....suburbs?

Bricks can be made by stuffing them old pick up truck tires with mud.

Soooo- it's not ok to use electricity because you can't make it yourself- but it's ok to use tyres from vehicles- (bearing in mind electricity was used to manufacture them)....did you make the rubber that made the tyre? No? Why is it ok to use that and not a brick in the first place? You see where this can go, don't you....?

Medicine is tricky. If it weren't for penicillin I would not be here, however penicillin doesn't seem to be too hard to make. Obviously it is more complicated than this, however I am beginning to think that some illnesses can be prevented by abstaining from certain things rather than creating elaborate medicines.

But why has God given us the knowledge and ability to make medicine. How is modern life saving and life changing medicine any more 'virtuous' than 'older' medicine?

I feel that if I can't troubleshoot or understand the commodity, it owns/controls me.

Then you'll feel that way for the rest of your life because it's physically and intellectually impossible to troubleshoot and understand every single commodity.

As opposed to a small community that provides for them selves.

So- not really anything to do with electricity and guitars and suburbs and having to know everything about everything before you can use it.... just wanting to live in a small commune?

No government. No dictator. "We are all leaders here."

Nice in theory- rarely works in practise! Some sort of leadership nearly always evolves. And like every other community, it would rely on the skills and abilities of others within that community that others can use and share......like those who understand and can build and operate electricity generators and medical staff and so on and so on......

If you're wondering about moving into a self- sufficient community- that's a very different kettle of fish from your original comments about God despising suburbia (STILL don't see why He would!) and not using anything you can't master/ control yourself.

If Jesus is the leader and Jesus is in us all then we are all leaders.

The internet...Yes it is one of those technologies and soon it will no longer control me.

My grand folks would get together after they were done farming and play music together. The internet, seems to me, has crippled human interaction.
This artificial interaction...

I came here because I am at my wits end. I didn't know where to post,...the layout of this site is confusing to me. But I am an ignorant person working on being un-ignorant xD.

The idea that most suburbanites including myself would not be able to last out in the wilderness disturbs me. So let me be broken with rods of iron.

Electricity is just a form of energy that is all over the place. There are several forces at work in an atom, holding things together and creating some tension allowing things to be ripped apart. Electrical charge is one of those forces.

In general, there is a force exerted by nucleons (protons and neutrons) that is a force of attraction. That force is very strong, but not far-reaching (generally the weaker a force is, the more far-reaching it is, and vice versa. Gravity is extremely weak, relatively speaking, and has a negligible effect on what happens inside the atom, but its effects are felt for millions of miles, attracting matter to other matter across long distances). There is also a force that repels protons away from each other. But that strong force of attraction overcomes that weaker force of repulsion, binding the protons together in the nucleus, along with the protons. It is for that reason that neutrons are used in fission: there is no force of repulsion with neutrons, so it takes little energy to cause a neutron to be absorbed into an atom and cause instability.

The electrons that "circle" the atom have almost none of the properties of the protons and the neutrons, and thus are not affected by the force of attraction. However, they have a similar type of force that the protons have, except it is exactly opposite.

For the sake of convenience, the force exerted by the protons is considered "high energy", and the force exerted by the electrons is considered "low energy". All energy, when given the opportunity, will go from high energy to low energy. For instance, the water at the top of a water tower has a "high" energy. And if given the chance, will fall toward the center of the earth, toward "low" energy. That movement from high to low energy is what allows us to harness that energy and use it for our own purposes. Electricity is no different. (the difference between the high and the low is what gives that movement of energy its strength, and we call that "electromotive force", or "voltage")

As electrical energy moves from high to low, we are able to harness that energy to do useful things with it. For example, as electrical energy moves from high to low (we call that "current flow", measured in amperage, or "amps") inside a wire that is made into a coil, that current creates a magnetic field in that coil. That principle right there accounts for the overwhelmingly vast majority of all electrical applications. We make magnets so that we can use the magnets to do work, and we create circuitry in order to control when the magnets turn on and off. For instance, fans work because of magnets; many valves that we use open and close due to a piston driven by a magnet and a spring; many automatic switches accomplish their switching with magnets; etc, etc.

Electricity is nothing mysterious. It's just a common form of energy that we have learned to harness in order to do useful work for us. If you can make it yourself, then you can use it for yourself, no different from catching rain water and purifying it yourself for drinking. There are multiple ways to make electricity, some more practical than others, especially when you have limited resources. If you can find and effective way to generate some electricity for yourself, then more power to you.

What a nice description of electricity.

OP-- Do some reading on solar converters, and dig through catalogs, and you will begin to find viable options.

Suburbia has been criticized for as long as I can remember, yet most of my friends have lived there and not felt abandoned by God. People group together in an organized fashion so they can live close to their jobs, get reasonable transportation to schools (not 30 miles each way), organize road maintenance, and keep the bears away.

When you live on your own, it's all up to you.

You might need to plow your own road so the mailman can get to your driveway...maintain your own satellite dish if you want any form of cable or internet. Your phone might not reach the range you want to live in. Coyotes might harass your pets, hawks fly off with your chickens, and deer will eat your gardens.

And what if a squatter decides to live on your land? Will you be able to kick them off? What if people steal your firewood, apples off your trees, corn out of your fields, tractors out of your barns. I have seen all these things happen in suburbia, so they will also happen where nobody's looking.

But worst of all, who will listen to your music? If you move too far away from people, there will be one lonely single-line bass chord echoing across the hills, setting off wolf howls. Wouldn't it be nice to live close enough to other musicians?

Don't despise the hand that feeds you. If your food is your music, make sure you can still enjoy jamming and performing.
