  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

I have an ongoing debate with a friend. He insists that he is God and God is him--we are not separate "entities"; that we are all God, and that whatever I say to him, I am saying to God. He goes so far to say that all objects are God.

I say that the spirit of God is IN us and always with us. We are not God, though we were created by him and obedient to him. I am a Baptist and we teach, preach, and life by The Word. I have yet to see or hear anyone say that we are God.

If anyone out there has a scripture verse that says we are each God. And God IS. I would most appreciate where he is coming from - or where he might have gotten the mistaken notion.

Please Reply Soon--this is creating a great deal of unwanted discord.

Just to be clear - does your friend believe Scripture? If so, I don't see how he can reconcile the ideas of sin and redemption. By his view, God sinned against Himself and then redeemed Himself to Himself. Scripture is full of ways that we are totally different than God (we sin, He can't) and can not, therefore, be Him.

Here are a couple verses I found...you are right "we" are not God...although every believer has Christ in them....Col. 1:27

John 3:31

"He who comes from above is above all; he who is of the earth is earthly and speaks of the earth. He who comes from heaven is above all.

1 Cornithians 15:47

The first man was of the earth, made of dust; the second Man is the Lord from heaven.

The best scripture to straighten this out for Christians is in John:

"The Spirit goes where it wishes, and you hear the sound,
but you don't know where it comes from or where it goes.
So it is with everyone who is born of the Spirit."(John 3:8 literal)

Here Jesus clearly teaches that unlike modern religionists who teach that the Spirit of God is 'everywhere', the Spirit in fact chooses NOT to be 'everywhere', but rather is only to be found where it wishes to be. This explains descriptions of the Holy Spirit descending upon Jesus, and the promise of the Holy Spirit to come, made by Jesus at the Last Supper.

God may know everything, but He does not choose to be 'everywhere', which is His choice. Instead, God favours humble persons whom He loves with His presence.
