Jesus Christ, the second person of our triune God – Father, Son, and Holy Spirit – had just been crucified on a cross to his death, but was resurrected from the dead by God the Father on the third day. Some of the women came to the tomb and found it empty. An angel spoke to them and told them to go tell the Lord’s disciples (now 11 of them) that Jesus had risen from the dead, that he was going ahead to Galilee, and there they would see him. And while they were on their way, a plot was afoot to discredit Jesus’ resurrection.

“But the eleven disciples proceeded to Galilee, to the mountain which Jesus had designated. When they saw Him, they worshiped Him; but some were doubtful. And Jesus came up and spoke to them, saying, ‘All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth. Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age.’” (Matthew 28:16-20 NASB1995)

Jesus was about to ascend back to the Father in heaven, so he was going to leave his disciples alone, but not alone because he promised them he would send them the Holy Spirit to live in them and to remind them of all that Jesus had taught them, and to serve as their counselor, comforter, and guide. But physically he would no longer be with them, and so he gave them instructions as to what they should do, as his disciples, in continuing to spread the good news of the gospel, only now to include the whole world.

And we should not take these instructions to be only for the 11 disciples but for all of us who are disciples of Christ via genuine biblical faith in Jesus Christ, which requires that we die with Christ to sin and that we now obey our Lord and his commandments. For we are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for God’s own possession, so that we may proclaim the excellencies of Him who has called us out of darkness (sin) into His marvelous light (truth, righteousness, repentance, obedience).

And we are the salt of the earth and the light of the world, and we are to guard against losing our testimonies, and we are to shine the light of the gospel for the world to see. And we are to be the Lord’s witnesses for the truth of the gospel to the ends of the earth. For how beautiful are the feet of those who preach the good news. But we must make certain that we are shining the true light and that the “good news” we are sharing is the same as what Jesus and his New Testament apostles taught, and not the lies.

[Matthew 5:13-16; Matthew 28:18-20; John 4:31-38; John 13:13-17; John 14:12; Acts 1:8; Acts 26:18; Romans 10:14-15; Ephesians 2:10; Ephesians 5:11-14; 1 Peter 2:21,29; 1 John 2:6]

In the power and by the authority of Christ Jesus, we who believe in Jesus Christ, in truth and in righteousness, who are his followers, his disciples, are to go where the Lord sends us, and we are to make disciples of Christ of people of all nations, teaching them to observe (to obey) all that Jesus commanded us. If, by our testimonies, people come to genuine faith in Jesus Christ, and if we are with them in person, we should also baptize them, if possible. But if our ministry is primarily via the internet, we cannot do that.

But we don’t have to be the ones to do the baptizing. Paul stated that Christ did not send him to baptize, but to preach the gospel, and that he baptized very few people (1 Corinthians 1:14-17). And water baptism is not what determines our salvation. It is symbolic of what has already taken place in the life of the believer in Christ, which is about us dying with Christ to sin and us being raised with Christ to walk in newness of life in him, no longer to live as slaves to sin but as slaves to righteousness (Romans 6:1-18).

[Matthew 3:13-17; Matthew 10:11-12; John 1:29-34; Mark 10:37-39; Acts 9:15-18; Acts 10:44-48; Acts 18:7-8; Acts 22:12-16; Romans 6:1-7]

And we are to teach them to obey all that God – Father, Son, and Holy Spirit – commands of his followers under the New Covenant.

For Jesus Christ taught that to come to him we must deny self, take up our cross daily (die daily to sin), and follow (obey) him. For if we hold on to living in sin and for self, we will lose our lives for eternity. But if we deny self, die daily to sin, by the Spirit, and we walk in obedience to our Lord and to his commands, in his power, then we have eternal life with God. For not everyone who calls him “Lord” will enter the kingdom of heaven, but the one DOING (obeying) the will of God (see Luke 9:23-26; Matthew 7:21-23).

Seek the Lord

Based off Isaiah 55

Musical Instrumentation by Mark Bradley

“Come to Me all you who thirst; come to waters.
Listen to Me, and eat what’s good today,
And your soul will delight in richest of fare.
Give ear to Me, and you will live.
I have made an eternal covenant with you.
Wash in the blood of the Lamb.”

Seek the Lord while He may be found; call on Him.
Let the wicked forsake his way, in truth.
Let him turn to the Lord, and he will receive mercy.
Freely, God pardons him.
“For My thoughts are not your thoughts,
Nor are your ways My ways,”
declares the Lord, our God.

“My word that goes out of My mouth is truthful.
It will not return to Me unfulfilled.
My word will accomplish all that I desire,
And achieve the goal I intend.
You will go in joy and be led forth in peace.
The mountains will burst into song… before you,
And all of the trees clap their hands.”
