  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Hi, CeeBee. :wave:

It was probably "O Come all Ye Faithful", which is a traditonal Latin tune "Adeste Fideles".

Adeste Fideles History and Lyrics

Adeste Fideles, also known as O come all ye Faithful, is a traditional tune first written in 1742 by John Francis Wade in France. It was translated into English in 1852.

Adeste fideles,
laeti triumphantes,
Venite, venite in Bethlehem!
Natum videte,
Regem angelorum
Venite adoremus,
Venite adoremus,
Venite adoremus
Dominum.

Cantet nunc Io!
chorus angelorum;
Cantet nunc aula caelestium
Gloria, gloria,
in excelsis Deo
Venite adoremus,
Venite adoremus,
Venite adoremus
Dominum.

***

O come, all ye faithful,
Joyful and triumphant,
O come ye, O come ye to Bethlehem.
Come and behold Him,
Born the King of Angels!
O come, let us adore Him,
O come, let us adore Him,
O come, let us adore Him,
Christ the Lord.

Sing, alleluia,
All ye choirs of angels;
O sing, all ye blissful ones of heav'n above.
Glory to God -
In the highest glory!
O come, let us adore Him,
O come, let us adore Him,
O come, let us adore Him,
Christ the Lord.

Yea, Lord, we greet Thee,
Born this happy morning;
Jesus, to Thee be the glory giv'n;
Word of the Father,
Now in the flesh appearing,
O come, let us adore Him,
O come, let us adore Him,
O come, let us adore Him,
Christ the Lord.

The carol could have been Angels From the realms of Glory, or Angels we have heard on High, which can share the tune "Gloria", and end in a very complicated Gloria chorus.

Angels from the Realms of Glory

Angels from the realms of glory,
Wing your flight o’er all the earth;
Ye who sang creation’s story
Now proclaim Messiah’s birth.
Gloria in excelsis Deo.
Gloria in excelsis Deo!

Shepherds, in the field abiding,
Watching o’er your flocks by night,
God with us is now residing;
Yonder shines the infant light:
Gloria in excelsis Deo.
Gloria in excelsis Deo!

Sages, leave your contemplations,
Brighter visions beam afar;
Seek the great Desire of nations;
Ye have seen His natal star.
Gloria in excelsis Deo.
Gloria in excelsis Deo!

Saints, before the altar bending,
Watching long in hope and fear;
Suddenly the Lord, descending,
In His temple shall appear.
Gloria in excelsis Deo.
Gloria in excelsis Deo!

All creation, join in praising
God, the Father, Spirit, Son,
Evermore your voices raising
To th’eternal Three in One.
Gloria in excelsis Deo.
Gloria in excelsis Deo!

The hymn is sometimes sung with the gloria in ecelsis replaced by the English words:

Come and worship, come and worship
Worship Christ, the newborn King.

It could have been the Gloria from Mass. I remember hearing a version which used "Gloria, Gloria", and it was modern-sounding. Most of it was in English, but the refrain was in Latin, "Gloria, gloria in excelsis Deo".
