I just found something on Amazon, these are global walkie-talkies, they are walkie-talkies but have global range, they use satellite phone technology and you can talk between any locations in the entire world, these are only about $200 for 2 of them. These would be just the ticket for missionaries in extreme remote areas such as the amazon rainforest or african bush! Link is below if you want to have a look:

Seems rather suss to me. The picture clearly shows they use SIM cards. And they promise "no monthly fees or subscription fees required", yet they also say, "Simply renew your service through us to stay connected without interruption." Unless they are providing that service for free, there's a subscription fee hidden in there. And it also says that it works in the USA and Canada wherever there's 4G LTE coverage. So it would surely need the cell tower infrastructure.

Looks like a mobile pohone with extra steps and less functionality.
