'I highly recommend Pink's fine study of the Pauline prayers. In a day when prayer is badly misunderstood and abused, this fine study of the apostolic example of prayer in Paul's writings provides a much needed balance. You will truly be blessed as you consider the fact that the Apostle did not pray for worldly blessings but true spiritual blessings that abide for eternity.' - Dr. James White

‘Don’t waste your time reading Barth and Brunner. You will get nothing from them to aid you with preaching. Read Pink.’ - D.M. LOYD-JONES

‘His influence circles the globe and today a mighty host of preachers of various denominations are using his materials and preaching to congregations large and small, the truths he mined from the Word of God. I honour him for his courage, insightfulness, perspicuity, balance, and above all his evident passionate love for the triune God.’ - JOHN THORNBURY

‘It is in the practical and devotional field that Pink really comes into his own, and that he is almost uniformly uplifting, stimulating and often inspiring…His grasp of the ways of God in conversion and in spiritual experience is masterly and reveals a gift which has been exceedingly rare among preachers and writers of our times. He has sound counsel for the spiritual physician who knows the heart in all its multiplicity of need, he talks like one of the Puritans.’ - IAIN H. MURRAY

BOOK DESCRIPTION
From the moment of his conversion Paul was a man of prayer. His many prayers scattered throughout his letters are among the richest sources in all of Scripture for getting a practical insight into the subject matter of God-honouring prayer. Pink’s detailed study captures the essence of the apostle’s concern for the congregations on whose behalf he consistently prayed. However, Gleanings from Paul is much more than a mere study of Paul’s prayers. Pink’s insights help to gain a more rounded understanding of the apostle himself, the God he served, and the churches with which he worked.

Interesting thoughts...

'The less thou speakest, the better thou prayest'

'There is no moralizing, no uttering of pious platitudes, but a spreading before God of certain needs and a simple asking for the supply of same'.

Reminds me of a church I sometimes attend where the main prayer by the pastor goes on forever and by the time it's over it's more of a relief then any sort of 'holy' feeling.

I know the feeling. Was the context Pink was referring to private prayer? In public prayer and worship it is important for the Elder to bring the congregations prayers before the Lord. Sometimes that means praying things for other people that may not pertain to us directly, but it is still very important.

Seems he is speaking about a congregation or group...

'How many prayers have we heard that were so incoherent and aimless, so lacking in point and unity, that when the amen is reached we could scarcely remember one thing for which thanks had been given or request had been made....'

'a feeling that the supplicant had engaged more in a form of indirect preaching than in direct praying...'

Yes, it does.

Good quotes and accurate as well.

A. W. Pink has a great chapter in The Sovereignty of God on prayer. It might be a good read when you're finished. You'll notice that all theology is linked and relates to each other.

Yours in the Lord,
