  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

I've had a pretty strong feeling all along that I am having a boy. And the ultrasound said boy (and it looked like boy parts to me, though Puffca was not convinced and could only make out the profile shots). However, I just read a thread on another forum about ultrasounds being wrong, it couldn't hurt to have a girl name set, and we want to have a girl at some point anyway.

So, majority does not rule, but I'd love some feedback on names I like. Don't feel the need to hold back. If I was in love with any of these names, I wouldn't need outside opinions. :D So, please vote in the poll and you'll be able to vote for more than one. And please share any name associations, like the personality of people you've known with the names or what kind of person you imagine someone with one of those names to have.

I voted for Felicity! I love that name since reading Tales of Avonlea by L.M. Montgomery. Even though Felicity was a major pill in the book (and the tv show Avonlea) I've really liked the name. Also Cecily (they were sisters).

I have a family member named Phoebe and she is the sweetest little girl ever! Headstrong but curious and bright and she loves Science things. I actually wanted that name for a girl but now I can't since another family member claimed it. It's also the name of Holden Caufield's sister in Catcher in the Rye. ( I have a thing for literary names).

I also like Laura, because it reminds me of Laura Ingalls Wilder.

Eva, I imagine someone named Eva might be a little bit of a diva.

Madeline makes me think of the children's book series of the same name.

Stella is pretty. It makes me think of a flower for some reason. But it also makes me think of "A Streetcar named Desire".

I imagine Eva to be a bit of a diva, too. The only reason I've hung onto that name is that it was my number one girl name for over a decade. I picked it as my German name in my high school German class. But it was pronounced like Ava, since that's apparently how it's pronounced in Europe. I partly fell in love it because it was the name of Eva Gabor and I thought she was so awesome/elegant and I loved her voice, especially as Bianca of The Rescuers. I was always going to name a girl Ava (changing the spelling so people would pronounce it the European way) til it became insanely popular. Then recently I thought of using the name again and just going with the eve-a pronunciation.

Puptart, I like old lady names. :D (Though I'm not a fan of Gertrude.)

Yeah, Stella just brings to mind my neighbor's dog or "Streetcar Named Desire" lol.

I love "Phoebe" but it seems a bit too trendy right now. And I'd have the urge (not saying YOU would) to call her "Pheebs" for short :sorry:

So I went with Eva :) Graceful, feminine, and pretty.

Phoebe is still only 310 on the SSA baby name index. I'm okay with it sounding trendy as long as it isn't insanely popular.

I'm a little surprised that Felicity is doing so well in the poll so far, not that there have been a ton of votes. And I see Stella gets no love. :D

I love the names Phoebe and Laura the most and voted for 'em.

I dunno anyone by the name Felicity and I can't really picture a certain personality with it.

Phoebe is such a pretty name and has a pretty meaning. I always imagined someone named Phoebe as being gentle, quiet, and loved by all.

I knew a girl named Laura and she seemed to fit the bill of what I imagined a Laura to be; strong, kind, generous, and generally liked...like a Laura Ingalls-Wilder type. :D

With Eva, I think of some Latino woman. Cha-cha-cha!

Madeleine I think of the movie 'Matilda'...a quiet, shy girl with hidden powers.

Stella always reminded me of a plump black woman. My mother used to know such a woman, so I always associated it with her.

I voted for Phoebe, Madeleine, and Stella.

I rarely ever hear these names and I like names that arent so popular.

I love the name Stella because it is old fashioned, I knew a woman named Stella and she had a beautiful God-centered soul. She was an amazing person. So I would definitely be fond of that name.

Madeleine is so fancy sounding, reminds me of a smart girl, with braided pigtails and a big vocabulary with maybe knowing different languages.

I voted for Felicity and Madeleine.

My mental associations of all the names are:

Felicity
Lively, playful and spirited. My favorite out of the choices because its simple enough that she can go anywhere with the name but unique enough that no one will forget it.

Phoebe
Friends show. Ditzy and spoiled (those are because of a girl I actually know, thus, I dislike the name greatly, which isn't fair to the name but I can't help but wrinkle my nose at the name lol)

Laura
Sweet. Plain. Simple. My personal opinion is that it is almost too plain so maybe a nice jazzy middle name to go with it?

Eva
Ummm... not a fan.

Madeleine
Classy old school with a bit of flair. I really like this one.

Stella
A bat. If you know kids books then this will make sense :D

Puffca has already come up with middle names for boys and girls. I don't know if I'd call the names jazzy, but they are Chinese names.

I love Eva even more now that I know what it means and the origin language :) I think it's beautiful, classy, could fit a wide variety of personalities (I can see it on everyone from a mousy little reclusive bookworm to a beauty-crazed social butterfly :D) and it has enough uniqueness that it sticks out in a crowd.. rather than being just another Laura for example.

Hmm.. I think I shall have to name a dog Eva in the future (since I have no kids to name) :p
