Hopefully this thread won't be considered too off-the-wall, but I was wondering... for Christians with the Gift of Discernment, who can actually see spirits, do they see a lot of bad spirits hanging around devout Atheists and Agnostics?

I don't necessarily think that discernment means "seeing spirits" and if you have seen examples of that in Scripture, I would like to see them. I think discernment is dealing with the God given ability to see the difference between that which is of God and that which stands opposed. Spirits are behind this and influencing factors but to "see" them I think is a stretch.

I asked because I saw a person or two on the forum speak differently on the matter than that. They talked like they could actually see things and had that gift.

I certainly won't say they can't... there are many things I cannot explain. But, I don't see it in Scripture and if we can find an example I think this would be the extreme, not the norm. I read a lot of works from the time period of Yeshua (Jesus) and between the bible and those additional works, I just don't know of seeing spirits as the description of this gift.

To me, the whole "discernment of spirits thing" doesn't have to do with physically seeing anything at all. It has to do with understanding the intentions of others and what their motives are. Spirits can influence our thoughts and behaviors, and so the gift of discernment, to me, is knowing where people's heads are at, if they're trying to move me to a conclusions they want in order to make me think a certain way or do their will. After reading much of the bible and interacting with Christians lately, I can usually tell when people are embellishing the words in the bible and going off on tangents. I can also tell that I've been through many of the same mental patterns others seem to be going through, but people are unaware of just how much I can really empathize with them sometimes.

After reading lots of good parts in the bible in a messy randomized way, I've learned how to discard worthless questions regarding worldly understandings of spirituality before such questions grow thorns, as they had in my life before I fully accepted Jesus Christ. I recognize that many of these questions entered my psyche because I was open to spirits that would lead me away from truth because I wanted to make my own truth about reality. In my vanity, I desired my questions to be seen by others as intelligent and poignant and riveting and mystery-piercing. But now that my mind is de-cluttering, I realize that I don't need to go further down that rabbit hole anymore.

I witness other people on forums like avalon project endlessly spinning their wheels trying to understand so many questions that they make up all day long; I can't help but feel sorry for them. I used to be such a seeker of truth. The difference is, they will never have satisfactory answers if they rely on the imaginations of others for answers.

Sorry went off on a tangent of my own. lol

Someone in these forums said he could levitate by meditating. I wouldn't believe everything you read here.
I actually believe that is possible... but not of God.

Still, I'm pretty openminded. Even when I was Christian, I mentioned closedmindedness can sometimes be a very bad thing.

I almost want to create a thread in Apologetics, say "Can a person with the Gift of Discernment see spirits, or does it simply make them psychic?" But I won't go there.

For me personally, I can only explain it as knowing something as if you knew it all along. Kinda like people who say the had a premonition, meaning they dreamed something or had done this before and instantly it comes back to your remembrance. As if you knew it all along, but never acknowledged it until now or at the moment it happens. Again, I am speaking for me only. It's just a knowing and you cant give a reason as to why or how you know it. With discernment also comes a in depth of understanding the matter at hand.

I think maybe you have a flawed understanding. The word discernment isn't in any translation of the Bible I have. In 1 Corinthians 12 Paul talks about the gifts if the Holy Spirit such as a word of wisdom or a word of knowledge. As such they are snippets of information necessary so that the person can do what God needs done in that moment of time.

Floaty see through clouds are more an invention of Hollywood than anything else. However the Holy Spirit can make any Christian aware of the presence of evil without seeing anything. Think of it like the north pole and the south pole of two magnets. They don't have to touch for you to be aware of the effect they have on one another. Evil spirits are afraid of the presence of God.

I don't think evil spirits have to concern themselves too very much with atheists and agnostics.

I wouldn't doubt that they prod them, goad them, torture them a bit for fun, because that's what they would do to anyone they can torment. But as to making them the center of their focused attention, no, I wouldn't think so.

In cases where a person is full on possessed of many evil spirits, that may the case, but I don't think that is a baseline norm to be trying to understand how things are.

Evil spirits aim to steal, kill, destroy. Their main concern, if they have an agenda, would probably be against weak Christians. But I suspect they are more opportunistic than anything.

I do believe evil spirits exist, as well as angels devoted to God. However, I don't think we commonly see them. I think when one DOES see a spirit of any kind, it is most often by that spirit wishing to make himself seen. God could give the sight in times of need, but I am skeptical that He puts a permanent condition on anyone, making them able to see all spirits as though he is wearing some sort of special spirit-visibility glasses. That actually wouldn't be likely to be good for the soul, in a number of ways.

I have that gift and I don't see anything. I "feel" things. For example if you have ever seen a deadly wreck you feel sick and what not in terms of what I mean be "feel".

I have two stories I can tell you. I'll make them short.

First one was when I was like 18. We went to a friends house and they said they wanted us to meet their pastors friend who they talk to alot. I didn't know anything about him really. So just assumed he was a normal pastor. Well a few minutes later I suddenly felt a bit weird. Turns out he was walking up to the door to knock on it. When he came in I started feel a bit nervous or something. Like something was off. When he shook my hand the hair on my body stood up and I had chills. Like there was something evil about him. Its really hard to explain.

When he started talking he was talking about how the government was hiding an alien base on the "dark side" of the moon. He talked about weird russian things. All kinds of really odd stuff. It was SO uncomfortable because my discernment was off the charts. Again it was high just shaking his hand before he spoke.

The other time was around midnight. We went to a Dennys to get a late night snack. We were waiting for the waitress facing the booths. Suddenly I felt my hair stand up again and felt like something evil was around. Behind us a door opened and a bunch of people were talking. I didn't look back. But the evil presence was getting stronger. We were brought to our seats and after we sat down I looked at the people. They had mohawks, piercings, tattoos and looked "evil" for lack of better words.

They happened to get a booth on the other side of us and turns out they were a coven of witches/warlocks. They were talking to what seemed to be a recuit of sorts. The one guy said he was the "Head warlock" and introduced the head witch to this guy. They talked about incantations they use, especially on certain days of the year involving the moon. They talked about how "fun" it was to draw powers out.

Yet again my discernment worked well. I since then use it as a guide when meeting people. I mean I still give people the benefit of the doubt but its pretty much never failed me. Even when I meet christians sometimes it will kick in. Then later for example we will be at their house and they have "Dream Catchers" or special candles they burn to ward of spirits...etc. So obviously their walk with the Lord is not right and I felt it from the start. This is why its hard for me to talk to them because the feeling of evil is overwhelming sometimes.

John's First Epistle talks about testing the spirits to see if they are of God. In many ways I find the Epistle very searching.

If you are asking about discerning of spirits ....

I think the best way to explain is that a person can recognize truth from lie. Or even if a thing IS true, they recognize the lie mixed in, or that the motive is to draw them in a wrong way.

Kind of like there being a "rightness" and a "wrongness" to things encountered, such that the person can recognize Truth, can know when someone wants him to do something for a wrong reason, can know what the right thing in a given situation to do or pray might be, those kinds of things.

I would say one needs to be careful, because discernment is not infallible. GOD is infallible, but our interactions with Him are imperfect.

I was kind of just probing based on the info available to me. I was also wondering if as a scizophrenic, people thought I had a demon, or just a medical problem. There have been a lot of threads on here about that lately, and not all of them I was able to participate in. I am a silly enough person to have either, I guess.

Regardless of your answer, I will stay on medicine and take a medical professional's advice when possible though. It seems the sane thing to do.

Yeah, well the definition is:
Warlock. ... A warlock is a male practitioner of evil magic (distinguished from a wizard or sorcerer, whose magic may be benign) The most commonly accepted etymology derives warlock from the Old English wǣrloga meaning "oathbreaker" or "deceiver".

Makes sense but kind of a cheesy name. Sounds to much like the fantasy version you see in magic games and what not.

I had it once where I had the option of visiting a friend, however, I felt really anxious, no peace, and I kept trying to book the tickets--but the process kept failing. My mum said don't do it, and I was stubborn. The time there was a great weekend, however, the long term misery, implications, and so forth--I felt in spirit "Don't go! Do NOT GO!" but I ignored it

That sounds bland, but it was that profound feeling, I ignored it, and paid the price.
