When I first got saved I was fortunate to get connected with a church that encouraged us in evangelism. My first try was doing prison ministry. I would interview new inmates at a youthful offender facility, and the form I filled out with them was designed to start with their family's spiritual history, then their own, and then counseling them about their own salvation. It could be done in a perfunctory way, but I was really trying, and I do believe I prayed with at least a few earnest seekers. The experience helped me to share Christ in other situations, like street evangelism and going door to door.
Nowadays I am working as a volunteer with Child Evangelism Fellowship, and this is the best place to get taught evangelism, as well as get some real life experience! Children really can get saved, and we also can meet their families through them. Children can go to a Good News Club in their public school if a parent will just sign a permission slip. So many of these kids are not in church at all, nor are their families. It is a great way to reach children and families in your neighborhood!
I just spent a couple of years being a local CEF Director, and my wife and I trained many volunteers and started several new Good News Clubs in public schools. I have moved back to the town I lived in for over 30 years, but this chapter cannot afford to pay me so I am back to raising my support again. In the meantime I have to work a secular job and give my time on the side until I can be on the payroll again. But whether I raise my support or not, this is the best way to get started in evangelism...and finish your race as well.
