"A passionate attachment of one nation for another produces a variety of evils. Sympathy for the favorite nation, facilitating the illusion of an imaginary common interest in cases where no real common interest exists, and infusing into one nation the enmities of the other, betrays the former into a participation in the quarrels and wars of the latter without justification. It leads also to concessions to the favorite nation of privileges denied to others which is apt doubly to injure the nation making the concessions; by unnecessarily parting with what ought to have been retained, and by exciting jealousy, ill-will, and a disposition to retaliate, in the parties from whom equal privileges are withheld. And it gives to ambitious, corrupted, or deluded citizenswho devote themselves to the favorite nation), facility to betray or sacrifice the interests of their own country."

Washington was far wiser than today's politicians. In particular the U.S. should cut ties with Israel and stop fighting Israel's wars for them. The Iraq war benefited Israel but not the U.S. We've got to condemn American politicians that have become tools of the powerful Israeli lobby.

Not only that, but his statement about religion.

Religion is for the benefit of society if appropriated/it's convenient.

Secular isn't too bad, but if it deprives other people of their happiness, then I guess it becomes a bad thing. The problem is pleasing both sides, which isn't that easy to do.

Also, the problem is the enormous and ongoing controversy over religious symbols and objects.

For example, that cross raised up at the 9/11 site, places that display the ten commandments, and the religious clause in the pledge of allegiance. If these to be a source of controversy rather than the more important things taking place in this nation, then this nation sure is doomed to suffer.

And don't get me started on the Shroud of Turin. ;)

Anyways, I agree with him. There's a lot of political betrayal in the OT and there's a hell lot of hostility towards intermarriage and alliances (the latter showed a lack of trust in God). There's a reason I take a stance of indifference on most subjects. Like in war, religious debates can have a devastating effect on a person's well being.

But then there's WWII. Now that was a controversy worth debating. Should America have joined or stayed neutral? I don't know. Would have been a tough decision though.

How does national secularity deprive anyone of his happiness? Everyone is free this way to worship as they please without coercion.

I'm referring to the 9/11 cross controversy. Keep it there and one side is unhappy and remove it and the other side is unhappy.

Basically, what I said before:

The problem is pleasing both sides, which isn't that easy to do.
