Thanks for posting this! I followed the link and I’m sad to say it’s not accurate for my city. It’s missing a bunch of protests and not showing seperate ones for any day. As an example, I marched in June 12 with thousands of people, it’s not listed. Nevertheless I think it’s a cool map and still relevant if not perfectly accurate.

According to the map, the data was last updated on June 9 so your June 12 protest wouldn't be in there yet. Date of last update is shown in the white box in the top left corner of the map.

It isn't clear how often it's updated.

UPDATE @Sparagmos
The current map is updated to June 16. It must have been updated in the last couple of hours since I copied it and pasted a copy in the OP.

Yes, thanks for the map!

The protests in my county also aren't on the map. The towns near me had several smaller marches instead of one big one (the one I marched in had about 100 people), because there's still a pandemic out there. That's probably too small a gathering to catch the attention of the researchers. No violence, and the police were very courteous, escorting us so that we wouldn't get hit by cars along the way.

It's interesting to see how widespread the protests have been.

Based on news reports and comments I've seen in this Forum, I was under the impression that violence, looting etc. was widespread. That's why I went looking for a more objective view of what was really going on. This bit of research tells me that violence is actually quite limited.

When you add in reports of violent acts engineered by provocateurs and violence unnecessarily triggered by police action, the real incidence of violence caused by protesters is probably well under 20%. If you also factor in the reality that the degree of violence at individual events varies along a continuum, the whole 'America is burning' catastrophism is looking a bit overhyped.

My error. The map I copy/pasted into the OP was an image from the article dated June 9, while the actual map was up to 16 June.

I don’t think it’s your error. The June 16 map is missing some protests that occurred before then. And I don’t mean to distract - it’s still a really cool project!

I don't believe it is responsible to protest like this in the middle of a pandemic.

I think this is one of those classic ethical dilemmas for which there is no absolute right answer particularly when you add in the apparent level of resistance to lockdown/distancing within the US.

At least protesters appear to be using masks.

Wow no protests with observable violence in Seattle how violent does it have to be to get their attention

From the map I can count at least a dozen separate protests recorded for Seattle. At least 6 are reported as having observable violence.

EDIT: Using the map's city selector (on the right) Seattle is recorded with a total of 18 protests to 16 June with 6 having observable violence.

Try scrolling in to see locations in more detail.

Glad I’m seeing a lot more blue and a lot less orange than expected. To here some people tell, it’s just a been a non stop riot across the country.

I suspect there has been a deliberate strategy from some quarters to make these protests sound far worse than they actually are. According to this data, around 80% of the protests are peaceful.

I looked at the map and it doesn't show protests that occurred where I live. I suspect that protests that happen in smaller towns and suburbs may not make the cut since it is based on volunteered social media data that has been cross-listed with newspapers. At least where I live, the local media is behind a paywall, so it's to assume this 80% is a floor for peaceful protest estimates. This is no different than when they attack the Black community based on the actions of 0.01% of the population.

Agreed. Map isn't complete. Where I live we've had two demonstrations/peaceful protests and there is nothing listed for us either.

Do you live in Raleigh NC?

Using the city selector Raleigh is listed as having 7 demonstrations. I was able to find 5 on the map.
