Genesis 1:31a
And God saw everything that he had made, and behold, it was very good.
God looked at His creation and saw that it was very good. There were no flaws of any kind, nor was there any need for adjustment. This creation, including man, was a worthy expression of His glory. This is the state of the world after the six day creation, and God is just to demand that we continue to show our obedience to Him just as we originally did in Adam. A common misperception that is used to deny the righteous demands of God is that a loving and just God would not require anything of us that is impossible to us in our present state. We hate God for demanding that which we cannot fulfill and compensate by comparing ourselves to the most sinful people we can in the incorrect concept of being good enough to earn the favor of God.
Yet, why should we expect God to lower His standards to a level that we can reach without His mercy? Didnt God create the universe to express His perfections and arent mercy, patience, love and righteousness just a few examples of the perfections of God? There is no such thing as good enough as the best that humanity can offer God on our own is deficient. This is an accurate definition of Total Depravity. God is just to demand His creation to hold to the standards of His original creation and thus, it is a just thing for Him to punish those who have fallen short in this responsibility.
