  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

This is a thread I would like to keep set aside largely as a repository for people's references to various books, journal articles, studies, etc, related to gay issues.

I am not sure how practical an idea that is, but the hope is that people will do little discussion here, but link their posts to relevant ongoing discussions.

What I am wanting out of it personally is a better handle on what the studies are that gay activists and their supporters believe supports the ideas of gay marriage and just treating homosexuality in general as if it were normal.

Unfortunately, I am at the library right now and busy looking for things instead of writing about them, but perhaps some folks will post some sources before I have to leave so I can pick them up.

Thanks kindly,
Shane

I guess I may as well start listing the ones I have found here. These are not the pro gay ones, most of them, although several were represented to me as such before I accessed them and was able to demonstrate otherwise.

These are studies I was told say things that they do not say. They qualify though as studies cited in support of gay activists' goals.

It took a significant amount of time to obtain a new copy of the study. My old copy has gone missing (just a lesson to people to organize and update files and papers regularly). The section you claim to be part of the study doesn’t exist. Given the history of the site Dailey published his essay on I would not be surprised to find they created a mock up to cover some of Dailey’s more obvious misrepresentations.

As I have said a couple of times, I got this from University of Texas. It is not a mock up. To claim you have the paper cited and that it does not have the information it clearly contains leaves me little space at all to trust things you say either now or in the future.

Here is the heading of the download:

Oldergaymen.jpg

Here is the page with the information. Note it is on the exact page as the citation. Areas blacked out are to avoid copyright violation by posting too large a percentage of the entire article.

Wholepageoldergaymen.jpg

Here is my original highlighted closeup.

Here is the original citation from Dailey and a link to the page I found it.

10. Paul Van de Ven et al., "A Comparative Demographic and Sexual Profile of Older Homosexually Active Men," Journal of Sex Research 34 (1997): 354. Dr. Paul Van de Ven reiterated these results in a private conversation with Dr. Robert Gagnon on September 7, 2000.

Homosexual & Healthy?

You also made some claims about another paper I have been able to locate.

Dolcini “Demographic Characterizes of Heterosexuals with Multiple Partners: The National AIDS Behavioral Surveys” Family Planning Perspectives. 1993. Vol. 25 (5): 203-214 found gay men had significantly fewer sexual partners compared to heterosexual men:
Gay men:
0 partners-10.5%,
1 partner-77.9%,
2 or more-11.2%
heterosexual men:
0 partners-17.9%,
1 partner 53.1.9%
2 or more 29.1%

First off, there is no homosexual data in the entirety of this article. The following excerpt explains why, but obviously I would have to post the entire article to prove my statement, which again because of copyright I cannot do.

malehetAIDSmethodexcludesgays.jpg

Oh, here's the heading, just for reference. It again makes it clear that there was no intention to do any research whatsoever on gays in this study.

HetAIDSriskheading.jpg

Finally, here are the actual percentage of married men and their number of partners. You stated it was 53.1.9% (an obvious error from the beginning) that had only the one partner (presumably usually their spouse), but the actual percentages are in the 90's.

MaleRiskforAIDSmarriedstats90percen.jpg

I am not arguing that this closes the case. Indeed, the people arguing the case is closed are those who support gay marriage. My point is that this issue seems far from resolved and yet the APA states flatly that it is resolved.

There should be a multitude of easily referenced studies if indeed the case has been made that homosexuality is not an "illness", and even more if they plan to establish it is not "immoral" and that society is at fault for any problems gays may have. What there actually is is rather slipshod, and seems to indicate that, if anything at all, homosexuality is associated with a lot of troublesome issues.

Why shove all of this difficulty in with marriage, especially when the issues covered by regulation of marriage have nothing to do with gay couples to begin with?

I don't know if this is quite what you envisaged, but here's a few links that might be of interest:

Firstly, Adventures of a Christian Collegian. It's a blog, written by a guy who's gay and has taken a decision to remain celibate because he believes that same-gender sexual activity would conflict with his Christian beliefs. Some interesting articles and opinions (the latest one in particular caught my eye).

Secondly, the place I got the above link from - An Exercise in the Fundamentals of Orthodoxy, the combined blog/personal website of a guy who's ex-gay (or, as he describes himself, post-gay) and is working as an Anglican Curate, based in Oxford, and writes much on theology and LGBT issues - many sermons and articles posted on the website, as well as a frequently update blog. He's an erudite and intelligent writer.

And lastly, Whosoever, an online magazine for LGBT Christians, with current and archive issues, Bible studies, book resources, and a podcast.

Hopefully that's a fairly wide spread of positions represented.

All the best,

David.

Sexually transmitted diseases in homosexual men.

This is an excellent article written by Handsfield that addresses some of the issues.

He says, "Gay men appear to be at greater risk than heterosexual men or women for gonorrhea, syphilis, anorectal venereal warts, and perhaps for genital and anorectal herpes simplex virus infection, we well as for several STDs outside the traditional sphere of venereology, including hepatitis A, hepatitis B, amebiasis, giardiasis, shigellosis, enteritis due to Campylobacter fetus, genital and anorectal meningococcal infection, and cytomegalovirus infection."

He then goes on to say, "Most studies to date, however, have been conducted in STD clinics or at sites where persons congregate for anonymous sexual activity, such as steam baths, and the applicability of their findings to the homosexual male population at large is unknown."
Here he clearly points out the flaw in those studies as not an accurate representation of the whole homosexual male population, as you have extrapulated yourself. But, he continues and addresses this problem:

"Darrow and his colleagues.. have attempted to address this problem by reporting the frequencies of several STDs relative to various risk factors in a large population of gay men in the general population. Critics will point out, and the authors acknowledge, that the results cannot be considered applicable to all homosexual men; the population sample included only 4,212 respondents (1.5 %) to 275,000 questionnaires published in a gay-oriented magazine or distributed through organizations relating to homosexual men. This study commands attention, however, because of the size of the population surveyed and because it was not conducted in an STD clinic. The fact that only 36% of the respondents who had sought profressional care for STDs had done so at public clinics supports the concept that this population sample is different, and presumably broader, than other populations of gay men studied to date."

After Handfield addressed the validity of his findings, he goes on to express them:

"The results contain no surprises, except that perhaps that full 78% of respondents had experienced at least one episode of the STDs surveyed; and 2,228 of 3,696 who answered the question fully had experienced an STD aside from pediculosis. Although individuals who had been infected might have been more likely than other gay men to participate in the survey, this probably was not a major determinant, since only four of the 692 questions directly referred to STDs or to medical issues."

He came up with approximately the same result as the one that was under challenge:

"The infections surveyed occured with roughly the same relative frequencies that have been observed among gay clientele of STD clinics or steam baths."

Yet human physiology makes it clear that the body was not designed to accommodate this activity. The rectum is significantly different from the vagina with regard to suitability for penetration by a penis. The vagina has natural lubricants and is supported by a network of muscles. It is composed of a mucus membrane with a multi-layer stratified squamous epithelium that allows it to endure friction without damage and to resist the immunological actions caused by sperm and sperm. In comparison, the anus is a delicate mechanism of small muscles that comprise an "exit-only" passage. With repeated trauma, friction and stretching, the sphincter loses its tone and its ability to maintain a tight seal. Consequently, anal intercourse leads to leakage of fecal material that can easily become chronic.

The potential for injury is exacerbated by the fact that the intestine has only a single layer of cells separating it from highly vascular tissue, that is, blood. Therefore, any organisms that are introduced into the rectum have a much easier time establishing a foothold for infection than they would in a vagina. The single layer tissue cannot withstand the friction associated with penile penetration, resulting in traumas that expose both participants to blood, organisms in feces, and a mixing of bodily fluids.

Furthermore, [bless and do not curse][bless and do not curse][bless and do not curse][bless and do not curse][bless and do not curse][bless and do not curse][bless and do not curse][bless and do not curse][bless and do not curse] has components that are immunosuppressive. In the course of ordinary reproductive physiology, this allows the sperm to evade the immune defenses of the female. Rectal insemination of rabbits has shown that sperm impaired the immune defenses of the recipient. sperm may have a similar impact on humans

Arguments against legal recognition of same-sex relationships frequently speak to child-rearing concerns. There is literature on this. I've not reviewed any of it personally, and I suspect that much of it is tendentious either pro or con. Doing a PubMed search came up with several references that sound interesting. If you have access to a medical library, you can find them. Only the abstracts are available on-line without charge. The first 4 generally report no difference in child-rearing outcomes between hetero and homosexual parents. 3 Cameron articles are listed for a contrary view.

This is one of the many studies documenting gays appear to be more promiscuous.

Interesting article. Here is something I found:

Sexual Abuse: A Major Cause Of Homosexuality?

It is a well-documented fact that many many homosexuals were sexually abused when young. (This paper will conclude with a list of some books which support that statement.)In other words, there is an abundance of evidence that many many homosexuals were born heterosexual but were disoriented by sexual abuse.
Indeed, there are many more cases of sexual abuse than there are cases of homosexuality. As one large study discussed in a 1997 issue of the Journal of the American Medical Association found, on average 12.8% of women and 4.3% of men recall being sexually abused.1 (How many do not recall it?)
According to Dr. James E. Soukup, author of a book which deals with several subjects including sexual abuse: "In one national study in 1985, 27 percent of the females interviewed and 16 percent of the males reported to have been sexually abused as children. Other studies indicate that these figures are too low. It is suggested that eighty percent of all sexual abuse is not reported."2
The Associated Press noted in late 1998 that, according to an analysis of 166 studies covering the years 1985-97: "As many as one in five boys is sexually abused....It [also] concluded that sexual abuse of boys is underreported and undertreated....Earlier studies have shown that 25 percent to 35 percent of girls are sexually abused."3
(According to a JAMA review of literature re the sexual abuse of boys, only 10%-33% of male abuse victims ever tell anyone about that abuse.4 The review also found that: "Abused [male] adolescents, particularly those victimized by males, were up to 7 times more likely to self-identify as gay or bisexual than peers who had not been abused."5 And regarding female abuse victims, one study found that 38% of adult women ages 18-31 who were sexually abused when young [between ages 10 months to 12 years] did not remember that they were sexually abused when young.6)
Whatever the true percentages are of male and female sex abuse victims, considering how high the suggested/reported numbers are compared to the percentage of the population that is homosexual (only 1%-2%), we can see that sexual abuse can theoretically account for every case of homosexuality.

Sexual Abuse: A Major Cause Of Homosexuality?

It seems like a lot of homosexuals have been sexually abused. I believe homosexuality is not a mental illness but something that has psychologically affected the person. Many times, homosexual men act and dress feminine and the opposite is true for lesbians. There seems to be some type of dislike for their own sex. Anyone notice this?

Mireles-Vieyra MP, Lopez-Aguilera ML; International Conference on AIDS.
Int Conf AIDS. 2002 Jul 7-12; 14: abstract no. TuPeD4912. Profin VIH. A.C., Distrito Federal, Mexico
BACKGROUND: It is frequently taken as a fact that male homosexuality is related to a biologic alteration or by the subject's free will, in our experience none of the two options is accurate, because in most cases the male homosexual preference surges from sexual-erotic impositions occurred during infancy and intimately conditioned or favored by an inadequate father-son relationship.METHODS: longitudinal, retrospective, and analytic study of 500 HIV positive men with homosexual orientation and 500 HIV men with bisexual preference, the studied variables are related to the infancy of the subjects, its emotional characteristics in their filial relationship, as well as the existence or not of sexual abuse. RESULTS: In a strictly homosexual population, a prolonged or total father-figure absence background before their 7 years of age, resulted statistically significant, likewise the occurrence of a sexual abuse episode in early infancy. In 90% of the latter, the victim considered himself responsible, even if he had been forced by a person 10 or more years his elder, and 87% of the incidents happened with a relative; in cases were the rapist or aggressor was identified, it was found that 9 out of 10 of them were currently married and had children. In the bisexual group, the presence of a negative, emotionally inaccessible or aggressive father figure, was characteristic, the homosexual encounter in this group happened between 9 and 17 years of age with the subject's consent, who initiated early moderate or intense alcoholism in 67% of the cases. Sexual abuse also existed in 23% of the men in this group, but more significantly related to demonstrations of affection. CONCLUSIONS: The homosexual orientation is highly related to infant affective-emotional situations between the child and his father figure, providing a higher potential risk for sexual abuse or as to the search of male figures replacing an absent or negative filial affection.

I don't particularly find discussion of "causes" of homosexuality particularly useful. They are no different from causes for heterosexuality. It does not edify. It merely engages in useless speculation.

None addresses the appropriate response to LGBTs. That is better doen with the heart than the head.

There are no doubt tons of academic references.

I recommend some memoirs and personal narratives such as The Lord is my Shepherd and He Knows I'm Gay by Rev. Troy Perry and Stranger at the Gates by Rev. Mel White.
