In my experience it's rare outside of forums, insofar as I have noticed. I haven't had any issues with coworkers, friends, or family in a while with gaslighting. I'm keen about those things, though, and I'd probably turn it into a joke like, "I see what you did there. Brilliant." Just letting them know I noticed, but I'm not going to make a big deal about it. That will probably help them change the subject rather than getting defensive in a direct confrontation.

Gas lighting goes to narcissist. They are experts at twisting the truth. They are manipulative.
I know. I moved away from narcissist in 2018.

These are toxic people. Best thing to do is.

Yes, my MIL does this to me and her kids and husband and I don't get mad at her for it but I do get mad at me for falling for it so often!

Maybe he's comfortable telling you the truth about finances but not the family? So, he tries to cover the truth by paying the bill? I dunno..
