  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

I thought it was pretty good, if not great. The love story and coming of age themes were pretty realistic and interesting, but some of it was a bit cliched. Overall it was a good debut from the director, though. I'd probably give it three stars.

I definately liked it. I will try to explain why without sounding too stuck up or pretentious.

Major motion pictures have reached the point where rarely does anything matter but "How much money can we make"... Creative decisions are also sadly ruled by money.

That said, when a movie like this comes along I get really excited. Here is an auteur's first shot at putting his soul on the silver screen, and Zach Brahf let it all hang out.

I agree that the movie was definately over-done at some parts. I really disliked the part where they go through the skeevy motel and the part with Method Man. Sometimes there seemed to be slow motion or other cuts or effects that were there for no reason. They didnt contribute to the theme.

BUT, but, this is also part of the movies charm. The writer/director was just so excited to be making a movie, that it seems to me he threw in everything he ever wanted to do with a movie. What I am saying is, its cute that he tried too hard. Understand?

There was tons of stuff I liked... *Details about the movie but not spoilers really*

Much of the movie was very funny. Not funny like suttle funny like Lost in Translation, but really funny actual jokes.

I also loved the perscription drug theme. This is something that lots of people struggle with and something that I believe is a major problem in society. The in movie commentary on it was great.

And of course, what 20 something year old can't relate to the theme of being on a journey you didnt ask for and trying to figure your life out? We are all on this journey. And the movie is right, its OK to say "I dont know."

Overall a really funny movie, great themes for young people, an OK love story, and if you are a film buff than a great watch because the filmmakers joy and enthusiam truely pours right through the screen.

Just saw it today with the wife. Absolutely loved it! Best movie I've seen in the past year. Yeah, parts of the movie were a bit cliche, but not nearly as bad as what we see with most other hollywood movies. The only cliche that really bothered me was the very end:

Trying to give the impression that he is leaving on the plane, only to have him get off to be with the girl.

Otherwise, I really enjoyed the characters. How can you not love Natalie Portman in that movie? She plays such a cute and fun-loving character. The movie was reminiscent of Lost in Translation....but I found the plot and drama aspects of Garden State a bit more compelling.

I don't know, I'm usually pretty critical when it comes to movies...but I'm definitely going to be buying this one. I think this is going on my top 5 movies list.

Saw it a few days ago and enjoyed it, but had a few problems with it. I wished the last 15 minutes or so of the movie weren't so laden with stilted dialogue I've heard in a bunch of other movies of this type. This was unfortunate since it was consistently perceptive and well-written throughout.

It was also unconvincing that Braff's character would so drastically change in those four days back in his hometown from meeting the archetypal "weird and quirky" chick that exists only in these types of film. Braf's character more and more became a bit too self-absorbed with his own crisis he was dealing with in his life and became a bit frustrating to watch.

But still, it was a nice little movie with a lot of random original moments like the scenes with Portman acting spastic to declare herself as unique, the weird dude in the medieval armor who can speak klingon, and the silent-velcro inventor buddy, were all funny original stuff, but again, the last 15-20 minute resolution felt fake and forced.

Overall, a good movie.
