They experienced a spiritual death and that is why we are born into sin. We are all born spiritually dead and must be reborn of the spirit.
They died to God (who is spirit) and chose to obey there new master, satan. We have the same choice. We can remain spiritually dead and follow satan to hell, or we can be adopted back into the family of God. Our relationship can be reconciled. 1cor15:21 "for since by a man came death by a man also came the resurrection of the dead. For as in Adam all die, so also in Christ all will be made alive.
We are all dead.

In Christ

God cannot lie. God created Adam and Eve as incredibly beautiful human beings with wondrous intelligence and abilities. They were created in the image of God with a body, soul, and spirit; and God intended the spirit of man to be continuously in touch with the Spirit of God. Adam and Eve were righteous and free--free enough to choose God or to turn away. When they ate the fruit of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, they did the one thing God warned them not to do, which was sin. When they disobeyed, death became a reality not only to humanity but also to the animals, the plants and the entire earth. From that moment on the spirit of man was damaged, he died spiritually as well. Gone was the closeness he first shared with his creator. Our parents in Eden chose to sin, and that decision has predisposed all their descendents as well. But our loving God has given us a way back to Him through His Son Jesus Christ, our Savior, who paid the penalty for all sin. That is the whole concept of being born again. Our spirits can be joined with God's Spirit and we can have the ability to live a godly and holy life in Jesus Christ. When someone dies, their bodies return to the dust from which they were formed. The spirit of man goes to an everlasting state, because spirits are immortal and cannot die. My Bible tells me that at death those who are Christians go to be with the Lord for everlasting happiness and reward. Those who have not accepted the Savior will have to stand at a terrible final judgment.

Not only spiritual death, but at that moment the body started the dieing prossess. From the moment we are born we start dieing. But I think I just thought of something. Just like us, we have a debt of death. BUT God passed that debt to our sacrifice Jesus. Did you know God made clothing out of animal skin for them that day? What must happen for an animal to give it's skin? It must die. Maybe God passed their death to the sacrifice?
