Hi all. I have a interesting family budgeting idea for you all that I wanted to share. This year my husband and I hosted a blowout thanksgiving bash because both sets of both our grandparents (8 Grandparents total !!!!)were in town. We ended up spending over 2k on everything but that family photo with 4 generations in it made it all worth it. This is definitely not the norm for us though.
We have been married 2 going on 3 years and we dated for about 3 before that. Every thanksgiving (Christmas, easter, valentine's, etc.) We spent together prior to this we always had our big meal 3 or so days AFTER the holiday. That's when stores tend to mark down a lot of surplus meats and deserts to insane levels. Even the day right after turkeys, steaks, pumpkin pies, candy can be bought for like 80% off. Even though we did our celebration with every one else this year, my husband and I hit a few grocery stores yesterday while everyone else was lining up for TV's. We were able to fill our chest freezer with turkeys, prime ribs, and ham. Also this is a really good time to pick up long shelf life items like canned cranberry sauce, boxed stuffing, and gravey. That stuff can be had for like 10 cents a can now. I know it sounds weird to stock up on those things but trust me you would be glad you have that stuff in hurricane season if you live on the Gulf Coast. Box stuffing may not taste great but stuffing is stable, very filling and is great emergency ration if grocery services are interrupted; all you have to do is add water and heat over any heat source. Also gravey and cranberry sauce are a good source of calories in emergency situations, they are shelf stable and easy to store and consume without civil services like power and city water.
Just something to think about.
