  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

I was wondering if anyone out there is a full-time student and if you work full-time, and if so, how hard is it for you? I am at a job right now that is a definite career builder, and I am considering going full-time. I am going to school to be a counselor for juvenile delinquents/at-risk youth, and I currently work as a youth leader at a detention center. I am working part-time right now, and there is a lot of downtime, in which I have time to do homework and other things.

The benefits of working full-time;

- $2.00 extra an hour!
- I will get every other holiday off.
- It will open the door to a possible promotion in the future.
- Insurance benefits

The not so good things about working full-time;

- Less time to spend with friends, and relax.

What do you guys think?

I guess that would depend on how many credit hours you are taking, and how much homework you have..

I have been going to a tech school for a little over a year now and working full time for a year. I have class 35 hours a week, and thankfully no homework, but I commute 10 hours and work 40.

Its not too bad when you get used to it, but I think the question is less can you, but should you? I wish I had more time to spend with friends, at church, or doing other things. I can work that many hours, I make it, but I really dont have a life. I cant wait for school to be over!

My suggestion is this, when given a choice, try to choose relationships and having a life over having a better job or more money.

Like the other post said it depends on class and if you can work a fulltime schedule around class and homework plus if you want to have a life. I would pray about it. If I could work it in somehow I would work too but I can't work part time even and do homework, class and spend time with my kids and husband. It would be big help financially if I could be it is not possible because I go to school full time.

I would tell you that you have to be 100% comfortable with it....I tried working and going to school full time (15 hours) and it was very hard, I didn't have enough time to get my homework done and study for tests ahead a time...it was very hard to find time for family and friends and I felt like I was getting out of touch with everyone and esp. with myself!! I am not saying you shouldn't because I know several people who do and are great at it, for me it wasn't working but if you can manage your time well I would say do whatever makes you happy!!

I work full-time, commute 45 miles away to school, and I'm majoring in engineering.
In general, I am told that engineering at my school is "impossible" to work full-time, but a lot of that has to do with the fact that all of my classes have labs. It is exhausting, but once you get in the groove it's better. As everybody else has said, this is a decision that you have to pray about and make for you.
It is a big sacrifice, whether it is sleep, friends, or in my case, giving up that plus the bible study I was teaching.
It is an awesome accomplishment, though, and it looks great on your resume!!!

Good luck and I hope this helps!!

Well, I don't really have to worry about the family factor, because my family lives four hours away from me. hehe. I have been thinking about it, and I think I am going to talk with my supervisor about going full-time. I worked 48 hours last week and I still had plenty of time to do things with my friends... I just had to say no a little bit more. I can deal with it, and if not, I can hopefully change to part-time again. Thank you all for your thoughts and prayers... After Campus Crusade the other night, the feeling overwhelmed me for some reason.

well I have been there done that and it would have workd but I got real sick and burned out. It IS possible and a lot of students have to do it these days in order to afford to go. So a bit of advice would be talk to your prof's the minute you have a problem to let them know that you are putting school first - this will make it easier. Also, make sure that you get enough sleep. and do not get sick ^_^ also you could ask your supervisor if it would be possible during midterms and finals to cut back to part time for a week or so.

Good Luck!!

very good advice! I was actually sort of considering asking my supervisor if I can try it out for like a month or so and if I have any problems or anything to just go back down to part-time.

I've been having a super-tough semester. I've been working 35-40 hours a week, and taking 15 hours. This probably wouldn't bother me so much except that I'm taking Chinese, and that class alone requires about 3 hours of homework a night, so all term I've been getting about 5-6 hours of sleep a night, which makes it VERY difficult to concentrate in class. I'm quitting my job though and taking one that allows me to work less hours (my fiance is going to be helping me out financially, God bless him ;) ) and focus more on school until I go to being a stay-at-home-bake-pies-all-day wife.

I tried doing both fulltime one semester but it really wasn't workable. Social life isn't the issue, I don't have the time or character for much of a social life anyways. But completing even most of my homework was requiring me to get next to no sleep, and it had dire pyschological effects. I think it might have worked if I had less intense of a major, or if I had tried it earlier in my college career. But as it was, there just weren't enough hours in the day, or night.

I say GO FOR IT!!!!
It sounds as though you are young and relatively unattached with enough time and energy to accomplish the task at hand. That will not last forever. If there is a goal to your education, then go out and get it.

I worked my way through both a bachelors and a masters and am now in the middle of a doctorate -- I have a wife, a married daughter and a couple of grandchildren. When it was possible (and it was in my early years) I went full-time and never regretted it.

I work full time and just graduated with my bachelor's degree in July, but I'm planning on going back next year to get my master's. I worked part time for my first 2 years of college then got married, so I switched to full time work and part time student. But either way it was still very hard to do both. But, here is some advice...if you can take classes online do it! It is so nice not to have to worry about being in class at a certain time...you could sit at home in your pj's and do work...and on your own schedule. So, if you work during the day, you can do work online during your breaks or after you get home. Or vice versa. I'm telling you...this is the best way to do both a job and go to school.

It does have its downside, though. You don't get the same kind of interaction with your professor, and you don't have the help you can get in class...either from a professor or other classmates. Emailing each other isn't the same as in person help. But, if you can figure things out on your own, you should be fine.

Good luck!
