  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Hand him Lee Strobel's Case for Faith. It does an excellent job of giving the Christian perspective of Atheism's "toughest" questions. Lee interviews highly educated experts, which if nothing else, will show him not only atheists are intellectual (something far too many of them whole-heartedly believe).

Or you can try to question him about his beliefs (politely, of course) and tell him the objections you have. If he can attack your beliefs, he should have no problem with you politely disagreeing with his.

If you want to understand where he's coming from, you should probably read the book instead of flipping through it. Nietzsche has had a HUGE impact on secular philosophy and in fact on the whole of western society. I personally find him boring but only because I've heard his stuff over and over again from various atheists.

But don't even attempt to debate with this guy unless you are prepared to do a LOT of homework on the matter... atheists are ruthless, and will expect you to know everything about science, evolution, politics, history... you name it. It's very exhausting, and rather futile since you can't debate someone into faith anyway.

Instead, pray for him lots. Be reasonable. Display Christ to him through your life and words. Don't preach. Enter into his thoughts, by reading the book he gave you and asking questions about why he believes the way he does. Get him to read--at a popular level, Strobel's "Case for Christ" and "Case for Faith". If he's really a brain get him to read Plantinga's "Warrant" series. CS Lewis seems to appeal to atheists as well--try Mere Christianity and Surprised by Joy.

Most importantly, ask God to fill you with his Spirit so that you will not only live the truth, but that He will give you the right answers at the right time and discretion to know when there is no answer. And of course get into your Bible.

I read "Anti-Christ" and was extremely disappointed. To be honest, if that's what atheists use to defend their position, then that's pretty pathetic. The book didn't actually have any logical arguments to support Nietzche's belief, it was just him spouting off about his hatred for God for 90 pages. It was pretty bad.

^^^^ EXACTLY ! that book had no logical points what so ever. he would say things about jesus being an imposter and a liar and such. he made no examples of any 'truths' just slandering jesus, faith and the after life.

with what ive read i already want to know why this guy picked jesus to attack but lays no mention of budda allah or any other religon. why just christians? other religons believe in faith after life and the such.

this guy at work constantly comes to me with little to no knowledge of christ. one day he tried to say that jesus was actually trying to undermine the roman empire and wanted to take over to be rich. i patiently explained to him the story of jesus and the rich man when jesus told him to give away all his belongings to join him. it would be impossible to say jesus was after money when he never owned anything nor wanted to own anything. so i guess things like that happen alot but i will pray about it before i see him again tomorrow.
it would be a bad idea to openly rebuke this book to him right? it might appear im close minded and he wont want to listen to me after the fact

humility is key. don't get too worked up about it or too confident that he is completely wrong. remember that he believes what he does because of his life history--don't expect him to know anything about Christ until you model Christ for him and explain things to him. be patient. only God can change his heart.

Amen
Just trust the Lord for the man and let the Holy Spirit work. Be patient with him and yourself. When you can give an answer to a question, do, but don't be offended by his apparent blindness to the truth. We were all blind at one time and only came to the truth, ourselves, by God's grace.

Makes one think why would someone go to so much bother and have so much contempt for one who didn't exist, or if did is not the son of God. ;)

Nietzche: It seems to me his biggest strength, lies in his surname (not very obvious how it is pronounced) so merely mentioning it (correctly) seems to invoke a certain degree of cultural sophistication ;)

I think the big problem is that, people often like hiding in intellectual towers. The higher they climb, the harder they are to follow, you may not be able to coax them down, and you may only succeed in exhausting yourself, if you chase after them. In the end, it can turn out to be, nothing more than, an unhelpful distraction, from the things you should be doing.

It's tempting to think that if you are able to demonstrate, that you are just as capable as they are, of absorbing endless amounts of worthless information, then they will see the error of their ways and will actually begin to listen to what you have to say.

Tempting, but foolish. It's far better to just be the fool that you are. Which through no fault of your own, is gonna be, less of a fool than him.

IMHO: Atheism usually amounts to little more than an argument with itself, about a thing it doesn't really understand, but hates enough, to want to believe that it either does not exist, or that it wishes it didn't. Probably best to either steer clear, or get to the real issue.
