NOTHING is free, and quite frankly college (particularly non-trade schools should not be.

Do you really think that folks need you to come along and shout that out? We know that nothing is free. However are you aware of the costs of colleges outside of the US vs here?

I am lucky on account of how my college is indeed free for me. Otherwise it'd be setting me back exponentially more in tuition than a comparable degree in our peer country.

Not only is nothing free, but there is something about paying for your education or at least being forced to maintain high grades to keep it "free" that makes people work for it. if I am in college it is because to a certain extent I WANT to be there.

Free college would be great. But, it all depends on how it gets payed for; there is no free lunch. I think at the very least, the overall cost needs to be drastically reduced. I never imagined I would have to spend a few thousand for a semester in which my professor would preach to us the "truth" behind the Matrix, and that everything is completely subjective. That guy is getting paid WAY too much. (And yes, that actually happened in one of my classes ^_^)

The current education system needs major improvement overall as well, at least in my opinion. Schools no longer teach logic, critical thinking or how to learn, they just expect students to memorize and recite information.

Do you think this will help the United States or hurt it?

It will devalue and depreciates it, and everything else (including the curriculum) will fall with it. Well, that already is happening.

Also, who will pay for it?

If we lived in an ideal world, it would be very helpful. However, we do not live in an ideal world and the cost of free college for all would almost certainly bring the U.S. to the state of insolvency. We would end up like Greece did a few years back and pensions and SSA payments would be in for major cuts.

Did you graduate from college? Did you attend it at all?

I have a 3.87 GPA. I have a full scholarship, it covers my costs of living to boot. It is not contingent on me maintaining this high of a GPA. I can keep it so long I make over a 2.5. I work hard because though the tuition is free for me, my time has value. Many other folks have a similar mentality. They also want to do well so they have better employment prospects.

make no mistake. you're there only because certain people think they will get a return from your life one day. you're an investment and nothing more.

I did in fact go did not graduate, but the reason that was not money related it was other issues. You still have to maintain some sort of GPA it is not enough to just barely be passing There is a good bit of diffence between a 2.5 and a 2.0 ( which is what most schools require just to be in good standing.

But he has to do something for them to think that maintain a certain level of grades and behavior so in that sense it makes sense. You are working for it and there is a way to lose that funding,

Actually, I just looked it up. The GPA requirement was only for the first year. I never had a reason to think about it before since my motivation for keeping my GPA as high as possible is to make full use of this time and opportunity in earning my degree.
