From OSV:

(OSV News) — A diocesan priest in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, was found dead Nov. 26, having apparently taken his own life.
Archbishop Thomas R. Zinkula of Dubuque released a message Nov. 27 stating “with a heavy heart” that Father Dennis Conway, pastor of Immaculate Conception Parish in Cedar Rapids, had died in the rectory “by way of suicide.”

“Based on correspondence near the time of his death, Fr. Dennis clearly was suffering from an acute mental health crisis,” said Archbishop Zinkula in his message.

The archbishop noted that “given the circumstances of Fr. Dennis’ death, there will be an autopsy, which may take some time due to the Thanksgiving holiday.”

“We will inform you of the funeral arrangements when they have been made,” said Archbishop Zinkula.

Sad. :(

I just found out last week that a guy from my old PTSD support group at the VA, a guy whom I have known for years, committed suicide last month....he became one of the 22 military veterans who take their own lives every day in this country. :(

He had a lot of problems. He didn't have the easiest childhood; went into the Army and got really screwed up in the Gulf War; and he had a lot of trials with a wife who was, shall we say, less than faithful to him. He was no saint, don't get me wrong; he could be difficult even with his friends, and he was bitter and temperamental. Quite frankly, it does not surprise me that he ended up as a suicide; anybody who knew him well could see it coming, even years ago. He was in and out of the psych ward at the VA Med Center in Battle Creek numerous times, and he would sometimes vent quite vehemently about his wife's shenanigans with her "boyfriends". I think he probably only stayed with her for the benefit of their three boys.

I hope that he finds the peace in death that avoided him in life. He was an avowed atheist, probably not surprising, given his background; but my hope is that God will judge him with leniency and compassion despite everything.

If his soul is in purgatory, he most certainly NEEDS prayers. And yes, all of the apostolic churches pray for the dead, but only the RCC believes in purgatory.

No prayer is wasted! I believe I heard that if one prays for a soul in Purgatory and they actually happen to be either in Heaven or Hell instead, then God applies that prayer to another soul in need.

I too hope he finds the peace that he didn’t have in life. Some people think those with mental problems should just snap out of it but believe me, you can’t just snap out of mental illness.

So true.

:star:Heaven is going to be a great place for all those who lived with chronic mental illness and brain disorders while here on earth.

I've known a few suicides. Except for one whom I didn't know well they all took me by surprise, particularly one of them.
Sorry for your loss.
