Special Prayer to Cardinal Cooke for Fr. Benedict Groeschels INTENTIONS
As reported yesterday,Fr. Benedict Groeschel, one of the founders of the Franciscan Friars of the Renewal, is in critical but stable condition in an Orlando hospital after being hit by a car late Jan. 11. According to friends of the 70-year-old priest, he was walking to a restaurant near the OrlandoInternationalAirport for a meal when he was hit. He suffered a heart attack when he was hit, both his legs were broken, and he sustained a broken hand and head injuries.
Time will tell how Father Groeschels condition will progress. Many people are shocked and saddened by the news. But those who know Father well realize that he is facing this tragedy in the manner that he often preachedfollowing in the footsteps of Christ and embracing the Cross.
The Franciscan Friars of the Renewal are asking people to pray for Father Benedicts healing by seeking the special intercession of the late Terence Cardinal Cooke, Archbishop of New York whose cause for canonization has been formally introduced. In fact, Father Groeschel is the Archdiocesan Postulator of Cardinal Cookes cause.
Terence Cardinal Cooke began his dedicated life of service as a priest in 1945. He worked especially with young people. After ministering in a parish and as chaplain to an orphanage, he served in various administrative posts until being made auxiliary bishop to Cardinal Spellman.
He was named Archbishop of New York and Military Vicar in 1968, and was elevated to the College of Cardinals the following year by Pope Paul VI. During his entire life the Cardinal was known for his gentleness and simple ways. He cared for all the people of his diocese, especially ethnic minorities, children and the unborn, the sick and the poor.
At the time of his death it became known that the Cardinal had bravely and silently struggled with cancer for over a decade. During that time he worked unstintingly for those who needed his help. The last weeks of his life provided the occasion for a great outpouring of public sentiment by members of every major religious denomination and persons of many different persuasions. In response to requests from several members of the clergy and laity, then-Archbishop John OConnor, less than a year after Cardinal Cookes death on October 6, 1983, began the process possibly leading to canonization.
At the request of John Cardinal OConnor, Father Groeschel got involved in the canonization process that included much research and extensive documentation. In 1990, Father Groeschel co-authored a book, Thy Will Be Done: A Spiritual Portrait of Terence Cardinal Cooke, which was drawn from this painstaking effort. The biographypaints a wonderful portrait of a man who was totally devoted to God and the Church. Despite the fact that Cardinal Cooke suffered from cancer for the last nine years of his life, His Eminence spent every ounce of energy he had to serve God and His people on earth.
Let us together seek Cardinal Cookes intercession for Fr. Benedicts complete healing and spiritual support in this difficult time:

Lord Jesus Christ, we thank you for the inspiring example of priestly holiness and generosity in the suffering of your humble servant, Terence Cardinal Cooke.
Through his heroic witness of life and deep concern for the poor and needy, he quietly manifested Your loving presence here on earth.
We ask you, O Lord, to glorify him, if it pleases You, by granting us, through the intercession of this humble Servant and Shepherd, the complete physical healing and continued spiritual well-being of Fr. Benedict Joseph Groeschel.
With this petition, we ask, as in all things, that Thy Will Be Done. Amen.
Please continue to keep Father Groeschel in your thoughts and prayers.
