Hello! My husband and I have been attending an LCMS church for the last couple months and are taking the class. I am surprised at how much I find myself agreeing with, considering I only agreed to attend because my husband wanted us to. lol Most the questions I have the pastor has been great about pointing to scripture and answering, but I did have a question that both the pastor and my husband have tried to answer, and I still just don't get it. Maybe someone on here will be able to explain in a way that makes sense to me.

My understanding of salvation and forgiveness is that its once and done. Once I have been saved (and forgive me if my jargon is more that of a Baptist/non-denominational. Lutheranism is new to me), Christ's forgiveness covers my past, present and future sins. I don't have to worry that if I sin again today and die tomorrow without repenting that I'm destined for hell, right?

So if that is the case, why do we need extra forgiveness from the sacraments? Why do we continue to need more forgiveness if our sins are already forgiven?

Its not a make or break issue for me. I mean, I would much rather be extra forgiven than always be in debt and stressed about catching up! But I would just like to understand better.

TIA!

I remember reading once online a posting from a pastor who said, "You can never have too much Jesus."

Our old Adam in us continues to sin. It is that old Adam that needs to know that there is forgiveness, that Law Gospel thing that Lutherans love to talk about. Where there is Law, Gospel is right there to get ya covered :)

It's true that all our sins were nailed to the cross. It is finished.

But our old Adam doesn't buy that. Satan helps him to not believe the Gospel. So, God, being God, loves to forgive us. He does so repeatedly. It's the same forgiveness won at the cross. But it is given to us. Again and again. How awesome is that?

Christ paid the price on the cross, once and for all. However, until we reach heaven, we will still fall into sin, and need to live in daily repentance.

1 John 1:8-10
New International Version (NIV)
8 If we claim to be without sin, we deceive ourselves and the truth is not in us. 9 If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness. 10 If we claim we have not sinned, we make him out to be a liar and his word is not in us.
