We can all understand that God forgives us. We often chalk it up to the notion that God forgives everyone because He's God. So we allow ourselves to accept the fact that God forgives us but I have found that when we mess up, rarly do we forgive ourselves.
I have never met anyone who has claimed to be perfect yet I have met many people that never have grace for their own imperfections.
Unforgiveness destroys our souls. Its a block we set up that doesn't allow God to work on the imperfections of our hearts. It's not just that we have to forgive others, it's also that we have to forgive ourselves. Did you mess up? Did you hurt someone? Have they forgiven you? Either way, you have to forgive yourself. Yore not perfect! God can redeem your mistake, whether it was intentional or accidental, God can redeem it!
Many people can't forgive because they believe that forgiveness is saying that you are ok with what happened. Or that you are now cool with the pain you caused or suffered. That's not true at all! Forgiveness is all about punishment. God doesn't punish us for what we have done if we ask for forgiveness. When we forgive, what we are not saying is that we are ok with the offense, we are saying, please Jesus do not punish them or us, but instead change their, or our, hearts to look like yours.
Forgiveness is releasing someone from the punishment they should receive. We should all receive punishment for what we have done, but forgiveness allows the release of punishment and opens us up to the opportunity for God to work in our hearts.
Forgive yourself for what you have done and release your heart from the torment of pain and allow God to now change it to look like His.
