It's been some time now (sheesh, 5 years?) since he passed away and every time I go flying I miss him. (I don't remember the date, but it was in Feb.) He and I had a very unique connection... aviation. Although he never got his pilots licence, he loved flying. He used to teach Navigation in the Navy back in '46 and always spoke about it. He also gave me his old log book.
He was always very excited to hear about my flight training while I was in HS. One time I showed him my E6B "flight calculator" that I used for figuring out all sorts of aviation info such as fuel burn, estimated time enroute, pressure altitude, wind corrections... and a million other things... and he was so tickled to see that 50 years later I was using the exact same navigation plotter HE used in the Navy! He was the one who helped show me how to use the silly thing. He always loved hearing of my adventures in flying.
Unfortunately he never got to see me get my pilots license.
Man he would have loved that. And the one I would have loved to share with him the most was getting my instrument rating this last August.
I really wish I would have had the sense when I was younger to pick his brain about his flying experiences. I'll never ever be able to get that back, and really makes me sad.
I am very proud to have been named after him, as my middle name is Richard. I am so thankful to have had that connection with him, and be able to pass it on. Every time I go flying I know it would bring a smile to his face. That's one thing that keeps me going through thick and thin.
So, here's to you Grandpa!
I'll see you again some day!
