  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.
  • We hope the site problems here are now solved, however, if you still have any issues, please start a ticket in Contact Us

This is just a video i hope at least one of you would watch. Discuss if you'd like but it's just so you can watch it. I hope it speaks to one of you.
Thanks.

What is it with you guys and chance? You seem to mistakenly apply it to everything. "Enzymes could not arise by chance." Sure, I can agree with that; the probability is very small. But I'm not saying enzymes arose by chance; chemistry is not chance.

I don't have audio where I am currently so I'll watch the video later. I'm assuming it's one of the many "[wash my mouth][wash my mouth][wash my mouth] it's amazing we're here despite all odds" arguments.

Discussing chance in this context is silly. (Let's ignore that the natural selection process has absolutely nothing to do with chance anyway)

No matter what the chance is, any civilization that would eventually 'hit the jackpot' would ask the same question and if they didn't 'hit the jackpot' they wouldn't be able to ask the question.

Besides it's a funny argument because saying there is a low chance is admitting that there is a possibility. From there on it's a matter of the scale and time.

Hi, could you edit that number to look like the scientific notation?

1. It looks smarter.
2. It doesn't screw up my monitor ^^

As for the OP.

0. Stickies!

1. Prime mover needed != The Christian God exists. http://christianforums.com/showthread.php?p=50690711#post50690711

2. The chance of an enzyme forming randomly out of smaller parts is indeed pretty small. Luckily no-one is claiming that enzymes form that way.

3. A God is needed to explain human morality? Morality evolved (socially and/or biologically) because cooperating creatures can fill a biological niche. Ants don't cooperate because God gave them morality. Ants cooperate because it allows them to survive. Same for humans.

All in all.. some pretty bad arguments in that video.

Just out of curiosity, why does it screw up your monitor?

And, standard form can be achieved using the superscript notation: "[suр] Hello! [/suр]" gives you "[sup]Hello![/sup]" :).

And, I've seen the video. I'll let other people rip it to shreds ^_^.

I don't see how someone who claims to be "reasonable" can confine human morality to animal instincts and survival patterns. It simply is nowhere near the same thing.

A mod edited it already; there were a lot more zeroes originally leading to a horizontal scrollbar (and a very unpleasant layout of the entire page..)

And I didn't know this forum had superscript.. there isn't a button for it, is there? Makes you wonder what kind of other dark and evil functions are lurking in the shadows of the reply-editor... :smarty:

I don't know why non-atheists are posting in this thread besides me (looking at Wiccan child) but that's cool :).

An atheist CAN and many DO live morally upright lives.

An atheist has NO LOGICAL support or reasoning to live a morally upright life.

Discuss :)

What more is there to it?

I'm not saying there isn't anything more to it, I just honestly don't know what else is involved. :)

1. Being moral will often feel better. (because of biological or social programming)
2. Being moral will often lead to better results (people are more likely to like you, better chance of holding down a job, etc..)
3. Being moral prevents you from getting thrown in jail.

Logical enough reasons to be moral.

That's NOT logical when it comes to an atheists perspective though. They will eventually die and cease to exist for ETERNITY. So what does it matter if you spend 60 years in jail or 60 years in a quiet suburb? You will still be non-existant for 432523465235623626345634763476346436 years X infinity.

So from an atheist's perspective it does not LOGICALLY follow to live a moral life. The worldview completely breaks down. Atheists are atheists because of MORAL reasons. Atheists hope and have faith that they will not be held accountable for their actions after they die.

The logic of an atheist would go something like this: When i die, i cease to exist and there is no right and wrong anymore. So, i should live however i want.

It is not logical for an atheist to want to live morally and live the good life and be kind to people and do "right" things when there is no ultimate consequence.

Uh, because 60 years in jail is a waste.

I'm sick and tired of being insulted by Christians about my morality. Educate yourself.

It matters a great deal if you spend 60 years in a jail compared to 60 years in a quiet suburb with family. One is freedom, one is not freedom. I mean, this reminds me of the Lewis Black joke where they spent a huge amount of money on a study to figure out why prisoners wanted to escape from prison. If the only reason you are living a moral life is for some reward later, your reasons for living that life are wrong.
