This morning I watched a bird feeding it's fledgling out in the yard. The fledgling would open it's mouth and start making noises to let its parent know it was hungry. The adult bird would then stick it's beak into the fledgings beak in order to fill it's crop.
The crop of a bird is where it's food is stored, and is partially digested. What I find interesting about this is that if the fledglings crop is filled too full it can cause the fledgling to die, but at the same time if it doesn't get enough food in it's crop it can grow weak and die. The adult bird seems to know exactly how much it needs to feed to it's fledgling, so that it can grow strong, and healthy.
Gods spirit works close to the same way. We can consider ourselves fledglings in Christ. We need to open our mouths on a daily basis, making a noise unto Our Father who is in heaven, with prayer and thanksgiving. This lets him know we are hungry for his spirit. When we pray he feeds us with his spirit, and gives us just what we need. He knows just what and how much we need in order for us to grow stronger in his spirit. Just like the adult bird knows just how much to feed it's fledgling.
If we stop praying, we stop getting fed by Gods spirit, this is when we start to grow weak in the spirit, it could lead to a spiritual death. Much like the fledgling that doesn't get enough food in its crop.
God also promises to never give us more than we can handle, When he gives us spiritual wisdom, knowledge, or spiritual blessings of any kind, too much of it at once, could cause us to become arrogant. We might even start thinking we are better than others because of it, or our heads could be swarming with so much knowledge, that it might drive us to madness. If he blesses us too much with material things, then we could become more attatched to our material possesions than we are to him. All this could lead us to another form of spiritual death.
Once again God knows just how much to give us, so that we wont grow arrogant, or start thinking in ways that we shouldn't. Much like the adult bird knows not to overfill the fledglings crop.
Sometimes we might feel like God isn't giving us enough, but in reality he is giving us just what we need, not too much of it, and not too little. He gives us just the right amount so we can grow strong in his spirit. All we need to do is ask, and he will give it to us, maybe not in the amount that we want, but in the amount that we need.
