Hello Family of God,
Forgive me if this topic is in the "wrong" section of this website. I was verbally attacked by someone the last time I accidentally posted a thread in an incorrect subforum. Not much of a surprise to me though; seeing that there are few professing Christians today who TRULY *walk* the Christian walk, and to be the salt and light of the Earth. Let us have the day star shine in our hearts as we look forward to the long-awaited and *soon* Glorious appearing of our King of Kings, and Lord of Lords.
There seems to be a surge of Christian "flat-earthers" coming out of the woodwork in these last times before the Return of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. There are MANY who consider themselves "watchmen" of God and spend much of their time and effort to prove that science can almost never be used to prove the veracity of the Bible; and this often leads them to delusional beliefs and confusion. The mindset of such people are that they are among the "chosen" few who are the purveyors of Absolute Truth in Christendom today.
The Word of God is the most authoritative book on the planet, and even SCIENCE can attest to its veracity. The bible clearly proves that the Earth was round long before astronomers have discovered this fact. It's tragic that Old Testament "scholars" and theologians CANNOT rightly divide the word of TRUTH.
Some scholars have suggested that the root "chug" only appears in the noun form "mechugah" (Isaiah 44:13). They define it as a "carpenters instrument" or a "compass". But does it really say this?
"It is he that sitteth [upon] the circle of the earth [Heb. chug; i.e., the "circular ceiling-vault" of the heavens as viewed from the earthly perspective], and the inhabitants thereof are as grasshoppers; that stretcheth out the heavens as a curtain, (cf. Ps.104:2) and spreadeth them out as a tent to dwell in [i.e., the "flat" appearance of the combined heavenly sea and firmament of the heavens looking down from the third heaven]. (Isaiah 40:22)"
To substitute the word "carpenter's instrument" is not going to work. God sitting enthroned above a pair of compasses makes absolutely no sense at all. If what is being described here is a "compass of a earth" then how can it be a small, hand-held tool? because that is what a "compass" is. The root verb in the Hebrew does indeed mean to "draw a circle" -- but the noun "chug" refers to the circle itself; the "circle of the earth" can only be describing the earth as spherical. What else could it possibly refer to but "the earth's circle" as in reference to the shape of the earth itself? and especially seeing as how the Lord is described as sitting enthroned above it? Also, the word for "compass" or "pair of compasses" (similar to those used in geometry) is found in Scripture, however, the Hebrew word is "mechugah" (Is. 44:13), which is clearly not the same as the word found in Isaiah 40:22.
"Let no man deceive himself. If any man among you seemeth to be wise in this world, let him become a fool, that he may be wise. For the wisdom of this world is foolishness with God. For it is written, He taketh the wise in their own craftiness. And again, The Lord knoweth the thoughts of the wise, that they are vain. (1 Corinthians 3:18-20)"
Another biblical passage cited by "flat-earthers" is Revelation 20:9. Their argument is that "the breadth of the earth" is proof that holy men of God knew full well that the Earth was flat at the time of their writings. Here is the verse in question:
"And they went up on the [breadth of the earth], and compassed the camp of the saints about, and the beloved city: and fire came down from God out of heaven, and devoured them. (Revelation 20:9)"
No, the earth is not flat. More to the point, the Bible never even suggests it. I find it disturbing that false theories and false teachers are being "refuted" by other false teachers and false theories -- but also instructive. The devil likes to have stock in both camps like a bookie who hedges his bets by wagering on both teams. That way, an immature Christian who is not too interested in the truth will, if not sucked into the obviously false theory, be attracted by the equally flawed teaching that refutes it.
The fact that Revelation 20:9's LITERAL meaning in CONTEXT says "And they went up to the plains of the land [of Israel]" neither means that the earth is flat. Lastly, as is common with such movements, this is a "hobby horse" approach to the Bible. These types know a lot about extra-biblical details that have no actual value for spiritual growth, and they pursue these matters to the disregard of the whole set of truths the Bible contains which are crucial for spiritual growth.
Lastly, when the bible mentions the "four corners" of the Earth; it does not imply that the Earth is in any way, flat. It is speaking of the *four quadrants* of a compass. The "four winds" of the Earth is a figurative expression indictaing every direction in which the wind blows (e.g., "north, south, east, and west").
In Closing:
It seems that proliferation of wrong, false and weird theories knows no limit in our late Laodicean age. For that and many other reasons it does stand to reason that the world cannot go on like it is much longer. So much is that true that we would no doubt be expecting the Tribulation soon even if we did not already except it soon from what the Bible tells us on that point. False teachers will do whatever it takes to insert their "pet doctrine" into certain passages in Scripture; which in reality only disproves their false teachings. Maranatha!
God Bless!
