Newer research is really shedding light on how we're nutritionally deficient in one very important area: omega 3. Omega 3's contrast with omega 6's, which consist of fat and grains, whereas O3's consist of fish and leafy greens. The ideal ratio is 1:1 for O3:O6, but the average American diet is around 1:16.
One of the easiest treatments for depression is getting on a good dose (2000-3000 mg) of fish oil high in EPA and DHA (the omega 3 part). You want the ratio to be as close to 2:1 EPA to DHA as possible, but the most I've been able to find is 3:2, with, e.g., 360 mg EPA and 240 DHA.
Fish oil replenishes cells in the brain, particularly (I think) glial cells, which "cushion" neurons (and do other important things). I've recommend this to a few clients, and the ones who have tried have at least noticed a sharpening of mood and cognition, and two have mentioned dramatic changes in how they feel.
The point here isn't quackery at all. We're not eating like we should be, and the body very much affects the soul. If you really want to get the advantage, in addition to taking 2-3k mg of fish oil with the EPA: DHA ratio mentioned above, try lowering your omega 6 foods. Give it a month and you might feel like a completely different person, and at the very least the volume of your depression will get turned down when your depression gets activated.
"Well, there's no way this could help my depression." And that's your depression speaking.
Just presenting research here, not recommendations.
