Hello all! This is my first post, and I wasn't exactly sure where to post this, but after reading a few other postings, I thought this might work here. So I'm not exactly sure what I am.... I grew up with a mom who was raised Catholic and a dad Episcopalian, but they wanted us kids to make our own decisions. I went to some youth group, Christian summer camps, but as I got older, I kind of lost things. I started believing that there couldn't be a God because of science and what not. But lately, for probably the past 8 months or so I felt like I was missing something. I started thinking about what if there is something out there, and what I learned from when I was a kid start coming back. My B/F is not Christian, but practices Buddhism, and I have gone to a lot of Buddhist things, talked with him about it, read it, and I like a lot of what they said. But I still felt like something was missing, and maybe that was God? My B/F was supportive of me looking into christianity but he also brings up so many points that make me confused. Earlier I told him about reading about other people say "God is great" "I'm so Blessed" etc, etc. He then started saying if God is a savior, and great, etc. then why does he allow people to starve in Africa, or in our own country, or why did he allow 9/11 to happen? Why didn't angels come save those people falling from the buildings. Why did they all die if there is a God. I then got really confused, and started wondering the same. Can anyone help me understand?
He also said that the idea of God is so complex, and we as a society try to simplify it... God is something that has been around for so long and will be around until after we die, so can we really, truly explain everything?

Sorry if this doesn't make any sense! I'm just feeling lost and confused!

Thank you :)

Books have been written on your question, so any answer I give you is just a brief response.

Thank you for checking here and joining the discussion this comes up a lot.

First off: Death is not bad, but it is the way good people get to go home and the way bad people quit doing bad stuff.

Everyone thinks they would “love” a Garden of Eden type situation where there is no death, no hurting people, no needy people, God/Jesus visiting daily, and no weeds or pests. God wants us to be in such a place also, but from earliest story of Adam and Eve, they and we can realize the Garden situation is a lousy (impossible) place for humans to fulfill their earthly objective.

This tragic world situation is actually the best situation for willing humans to fulfill their earthly objective.

Do you know why you are here on earth?

Do you know why God made humans in the first place?

Do you know what God’s objective is as it relates to humans?

I assume that 'the people' your boyfriend referred to were those who were in the WTC on 9/11. His thought of God waving a magic wand and saving the people that others had chosen to murder denies our own responsibility for their fate. The choice as to whether they would live or die was made by other men, and the fate of those who died will rest squarely on their shoulders on The Day of Judgement. Also, a rabbi told me, "Good is rewarded and evil is punished, but not always. Otherwise, evil people would soon start performing acts that are good, not because they are good, but because the evil people know that to be the only way to gain power and wealth for themselves."

The bottom line is that we homo sapiens are in control of this planet. Whether that turns out to be a good thing or a bad thing is our responsibility. We cannot say that it's God's fault, nor can we say that it's Satan's fault. It is we ourselves who have control, and any decisions concerning the fate of others will ultimately be ours.

God bless-
