Finally got Longhorn installed

hmm, very different many applications require at least the windows 98se kernal to operate. I expect, in Microsoft's interests, that programs will continue to require specialised sections to each new kernal, meaning old OS will not be able to operate the newer programes, thus being a weakness.

User Managment (Home systems with limited control for the youngens)
NTFS vs FAT (Better File Security)
Remote Assistance for fixing other computers

Good points all - i'd include a MUCH stabler OS based on NT technology then the 9x platform. Also, some might mention System Restore which was also included in ME. I would not however because, at very best, it is hit-and-miss, at it's worst, it is absolutely useless.

Longhorn is niiiiiiiice. Saw it demo'd here at Purdue University last year when it was pre-alpha. It kinda is still pre-alpha. Tell me... where did you get this copy?

Big changes in file management planned (WinFS), relating to searching for files. They want to get rid of the anomoly that it's easier to search for things on the web than on your own hard disc, and are going to integrate searching into the desktop, meaning either you can organise your stuff by folders, or leave it in a mess and search for it, or a bit of both. (That's my impression, at least.)
Some files also will be restricted: another person or company can give you a file that you can only open a certain number of times, or on a certain number of machines. (NGSCB technology.)

E-mail improvevements will be to e-mail software not the OS (perhaps we will see payment/calculation to send e-mail to eliminate spam). File organisation should include e-mail organisation.

Bleh. Another twisted, soon to be hacked version of a bloated OS by MS. Good riddance. Looks like Linux now. Funny that. MS is starting to remind me of the Borg. Resistance is futile, you will all be assimilated. They hate Linux, yet make their OS look like it, and integrate several features of it into their own. Bleh. Go with the original. Use Linux.

Or better yet, get a Mac.

LoL I was a Mac hater with a passion until abotu 2 years ago. My uncle convinced me to mess with one for 10 minutes and see if I didnt like it. I like it so much I chucked the PC and got a Mac. And another. And Another...lol

Other than being stylish, they are easy to use, and nearly impossible to crash (and ive tried). They are fast, stable, and (sorry...) sexy too! Sure, they cost more up front, but you get to jump off the upgrade cycle of the PC for several years. The one im on right now is a Blue & White G3. Old, made in 98, and youd think it'd be a piece of junk, but nope, everythign in it is factory except the upgraded memory to 512MB, and the HD. Its still running at 400MHz (for equivalents of processor power, multiply toe speed x2 for pc equivalents, so about an 800MHz P3). Running OS X 10.2.8 on it, will get 10.3 soon.

As to the games, sure, theres LESS games, but I dont want to play every single game on the market. Blizzard has done an EXCELLENT job of making their games Mac useable, so I have all their titles, and there are more that I dont care to play. There are several MMORPG's out that work with a Mac so you cna play with your PC counterparts, and also networking a PC to a Mac is a cinch (threw that in for game playing compatibility).

Rebels? Perhaps. More to the mark though to say "To get away from a poorly written and unstable OS like Windows." For example. An error in a program in XP will most of the time cause not only the application to close, but will cripple the system until you restart it. Not so with OS X. When an app crashes (which is rare), it crashes ONLY the app. Also, stability. Ive had this system up and running without having to restart ONCE since installing the OS. Hows that? Cant say that for Windows.

So, even if you get an older Mac just to look at one, do it. You'll be glad to do so. For 250 or so you can get cheap older Macs off eBay and fire em up. They work great.

Anyways, the cost of new macs seem a bit much, but think about not having to trade in a comp for several years (like mine) and it still being an excellent working machine. Also, on top of that they come with almost every imaginable built in function you would need, so the only real things you would want to upgrade over time would bethe memory, and the hard drive. Kinda like those "kitchen sink too" things. LoL

Hmmm...not till late 2005 or, more likely, 2006 !

In the meantime, enjoy XP SP-2 and XP Reloaded later this year, early next year.
