• The General Mental Health Forum is now a Read Only Forum. As we had two large areas making it difficult for many to find, we decided to combine the Mental Health & the Recovery sections of the forum into Mental Health & Recovery as a whole. Physical Health still remains as it's own area within the entire Recovery area.

If you are having struggles, need support in a particular area that you aren't finding a specific recovery area forum, you may find the General Struggles forum a great place to post. Any any that is related to emotions, self-esteem, insomnia, anger, relationship dynamics due to mental health and recovery and other issues that don't fit better in another forum would be examples of topics that might go there.

If you have spiritual issues related to a mental health and recovery issue, please use the Recovery Related Spiritual Advice forum. This forum is designed to be like Christian Advice, only for recovery type of issues. Recovery being like a family in many ways, allows us to support one another together. May you be blessed today and each day.

Sanjay Gupta: Using Your Hands to Heal Your Head - Depression - Everyday Health

As someone who's dealt with depression for most of my life, I thought this article was both fascinating and spot-on. I can't think of a time when I did something creative or crafty with my hands and didn't feel at least halfway decent when I was done

Some of my favorite handy hobbies: drawing, bead jewelry, and gardening!

What brings you to this forum?

Who, me? I kinda said that in the OP I've struggled with depression and anxiety for most of my life. I'm in a pretty good place right now, but it's always something I have to be vigilant about. It tries to sneak up on me a lot.

Thank you for this article Inkachu. I may give this a try.

You're welcome I was reading it just out of curiosity and got to thinking how it really makes sense. I always get a sense of purpose and excitement and satisfaction when I'm doing something creative with my hands, whether it's making jewelry or planting flowers.

In thinking about it, I realized that I get that feeling when I build a computer. Though that is a bit expensive, I could try building something a little cheaper and maybe still get the satisfaction.

I found it rather timely considering my therapist was talking to me about massaging a pressure point in my hand to help release stress/anxiety yesterday. The hand connection still.

Tink - it's really not too expensive if you can tinker around with used parts and stuff. My hubby loves building computers and taking things apart and putting them together again in different ways, and he doesn't spend a lot of money on his spare parts. He gets tons of used stuff from Amazon and Ebay.

Yeah, our hands and feet are full of nerves that "speak" to the rest of our bodies and to our brains.

Other "handy" activities people might like:

Jigsaw puzzles
Pottery
Painting
Knitting
Cleaning up or rearranging a room
Washing your car by hand
Putting together a model (car, plane)
Working on a DIY birdhouse or birdfeeder

Going into any craft store or home improvement store really gets my creative juices flowing

I used to have lots of extra parts around, but they ended up quickly outdated and useless.

Plus, I really need money for other things, so I will find a cheaper hobby. Maybe knitting or cross stitch

I tried knitting last year. I wanted to make scarves for homeless people. I practiced and practiced for hours, but I couldn't get it right Probably would have helped if I'd had a human being to teach me, but all I could do was use the internet and Youtube to learn lol.
