• The General Mental Health Forum is now a Read Only Forum. As we had two large areas making it difficult for many to find, we decided to combine the Mental Health & the Recovery sections of the forum into Mental Health & Recovery as a whole. Physical Health still remains as it's own area within the entire Recovery area.

If you are having struggles, need support in a particular area that you aren't finding a specific recovery area forum, you may find the General Struggles forum a great place to post. Any any that is related to emotions, self-esteem, insomnia, anger, relationship dynamics due to mental health and recovery and other issues that don't fit better in another forum would be examples of topics that might go there.

If you have spiritual issues related to a mental health and recovery issue, please use the Recovery Related Spiritual Advice forum. This forum is designed to be like Christian Advice, only for recovery type of issues. Recovery being like a family in many ways, allows us to support one another together. May you be blessed today and each day.

Fear is a feeling of danger to oneself, others or an object. When we perceive a danger our body reacts by releasing chemicals to prepare us to take action.
This is commonly known as the flight or fight response. i.e. do something physical or run away.
People in the modern world usually don’t fight or run away (Flight) they are left with the feeling of anxiety (Fear)
This is where the destructive nature of anxiety takes place In an attempt to control those feelings, people turn to all sorts of methods.

Ahh yes, welcome to CF. :) I didn't notice that you were new.

I'm glad to hear that you have recovered. Are you on any medications, or were you, to help with that? (I have to be dosed up pretty well to avoid constant panic attacks... I would be a wreck, unable to do anything, were it not for pills. Hehe.)

A dear friend of mine suggests that I do more EMDR (a type of therapy, to help with trauma/anxiety/depression/phobias) to get to the root of my anxiety, to see if I can alleviate it. I'm scared of that, but it would be lovely to find out what is causing my anxiety.

I can try to help you recover if you like, no garantees.
The first thing you should know is that panic attacks are self inflicted i.e you make them happen yourself, to prove this you can't make one happen, they only happen becouse you dont want one, if you tried to make a panic attack increase during a attack it would stop becouse you cant have one if you want one, Im happy to offer any help I can.

Actually, the opposite is true for me, I think. Just talking about panic attacks can induce one... and thinking about them can cause me to have one... it really sucks in therapy when I am trying to find the root of them and can't talk because of the threat of choking. (I have actually stopped breathing before because of them... terrifying.)

I had the same feelings as you, but its a trick, you belive that you are in danger for some reason, perhaps feeling that you may die of not breating,
This belife sends a message to your nervous system to overide anything else and prepair the body for action i.e to keep you alive (afterall you are beliving that you are in danger) so the body faithfully reacts be moving your blood supply around so that it is better ready for action i.e the heart, also speeds up breathing ready for action, so you are primed for a fight or to run, only you dont fight or run, you stand focusing on your body syptoms feeling more frightend (I remember how bad that felt) only there is no danger other than the one you made up, as soon as you start to belive that the danger has passed you relax as your body faithfully reacts to the message that the danger has passed. I had lots of panic attacks but I cant have them anymore becouse I understand that they are self made, when you realy belive this, and belife may take some time then you have to recover, you have no choice. All anxiety and the related problems are explanable, feel free to ask me any questions you like
