  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

What is your favorite Samurai themed anime?

I always loved the tales of the samurai and the Edo period of Japan. I’d say my favorite is Rurouni Kenshin. I liked the OVA best, the one called Samurai X in America. I also like the TV series, which is less dark and more fun. I purchased the entire 95 episode DVD set, it was great! Talk about hours and hours of good anime! ^_^

I also really like The Hakkenden, but most people don’t know what the Hakkenden is. It is a story based on a really really long novel written by the son of a samurai. Just a warning, don’t watch the Dubbed version, they totally mess with the feel of the story. The main characters sound like immature punk kids rather than their true character. Kenshin is good to watch dubbed, but be sure to see the Hakkended subtitled.

Anyone else have a samurai favorite anime?

^_^ Rurouni Kenshin all the way!!! ^_^
Its my all time favorite anime. I haven't seen the OVAs yet but I've heard that there really awesome. I've just started reading the manga’s too, they really good so far.

Samurai Jack isn't all that bad either. Its kind of an anime more geared towards kids but I find it interesting none the less.

ya samurai jack is made in america but i dont watch it taht much. rurouni kenshin is a much better series (seeing as though it seemed samurai jack declined in goodness {pardon my gramar} after the first episode) though i wish i could see it un-dubbed and unedited for once (Himura slashes a person "what no blood?")

Rurouni Kenshin is my favourite too. But it's far from the only samurai anime. Samurai Deeper Kyo is pretty good but comnpared to the manga it sucks. Then there is a Ninja Scroll series but I've only seen the film (think it's rated 18 though...)

There are also lots of good samurai mangas. Vagabond and Blade of the Immortal to name two really good ones... and really violent ones too... ;)

a swordman who doesn't kill? :)

My sister and I are the anime fans in our family and this aspect or RK kind of bugs us sometimes! Especially when Kenshin was fighting Ginea (sp?), the guy who could paralize people with that eye spell thing. We wanted to see him kill that guy SOOO bad, we disliked him very much :p . But nooo Kaoru....Kaoru....well lets just say we didn't like her before but now she's on our bad list forever!

:) :D :p

Um... Samurai X = Rurouni Kenshin.

There's also Peace Maker Kurogane, which tells the story from the Shinsengumi side.

Well, you have the OVAs about his past where boold splatters all over the place... :D

All in all I think the fact that he does not kill makes the plot very interesting... though unrealistic, but who watches anime and expects it to be realistic? ;)

lol, which is why it startles me when i see 'Hikaru No Go', the reaction of the character is sooo realistic that i go, um, yes, i like this show!

but yes, though it seems a bit impossible with Kenshin, i think it's a pretty good ideal that if, given the will and power, can be achieved. And we do see all these inner struggles in him, so it isn't totally unrealistic.

What I like the most about Kenshin is that it is about a man who understands that he has sinned, and goes around trying to atone for his sin, the only way he knows how. I also liked....SPOILER ALERT......

How that what was the source of his power became the source of his destruction, due to improper use (Kenshin not taking care of himself due to self-hatred, not completing his training when his body was still developing and could properly adapt to Hiten Mitsurgi Ryu).

Likewise, I like Blade of the Immortal because its basically the same thing, except Manji is a complete bad a$$
